DRUNK AS A SKUNK

DRUNK AS A SKUNK

A Poem by Betty Hermelee
"

Beach party

"
We all toasted to each other and got wasted
it was quite a scene at a remote beach
the sky was nearly black with a quarter moon and a few flickering stars
we laughed and cried about our momentary emotions
and hugged tight each other's shoulders
in camaraderie

In a while, we all decided to make a bonfire
retrieved some old driftwood, piled it perfectly
one of us took a match and lit it as we all
took a sip of our brew
in an instant, a great fireball of flames took to the sky
red, orange, yellow, a kaleidoscope of color
mesmerized us for minutes
each of us contemplating in our own deep souls
the present and the past
then laughed until we collapsed on the beach
drunk as skunks

Oh Betty, this I poem is so relatable and takes me back many, many years to my much younger days. You have created a wonderful ambience here and your imagery brought people in my past, so much closer. Such fun and carefree times. Such hangovers the following day too. I love where you took me. All good wishes dear poet.

This made me think of the Bonfires we had in Boy Scouts, without the drink...but we sure felt high.

Scary stories, the marshmallows...and the idea of drunk as skunks always made me chuckle...I sure never saw a drunk one...but I saw plenty of dead skunks in the middle of the road as Loundin Wainwright III sang in his song.
Fun kaleidoscope of scents here.

this is your memory, completely yours. so why did it speak to me so? i guess it reminded me of times i spent with my friends, unforgettable nights, full of laughter. there weren't any bonfires... i don't think so... but certainly got drunk as heck. reading this helped me feel a little less lonely today, beautiful work.
