BEST FRIENDS

BEST FRIENDS

A Poem by Betty Hermelee
"

romping in the park

"

when I was young
I used to romp in the park
with my best friend Patty
who lived across the hall
in the same building in New York City
We would bring our scooters along
to ride them in the nearby park
we would ride for hours scooting in between pedestrians
laughing, screaming for joy
careful not to hit anyone
One day, Patty fell off the scooter
she could no longer romp in the park
at once, a young woman came to her aide
she just happened to have a bandage in her pocket
and, a baby under her arm
with that, she was able to place the bandage
on Patty's knee
I felt sorry for Patty
as she had to limp home from the park
scooter in hand
i did the same to make her feel better
after all we were best friends

Youthful exuberance is fun, but it can lead to dangerous outcomes. Patty may have gotten off easy.

Sad as sad story yet what a wonderful lesson you and your friend learned - takes a stranger's kindness to show you a bad friend's lack of heart! Super flow of words, Better, memory aired, still visual and more so in the way told. Thank you .. :)

I'm all for that!
dear Betty.... I had my share of scraps on scooters and bikes and was lucky enough to survive. Friends do need each other... a lovely poem to cherish throughout Life as a "lucky charm" poem. gently, Pat

What a sad but equally beautiful story you narrate in this lovely poem, Betty. How kind the lady was to bandage your dear friend's knee and how lovely of you to limp home from the park with her, a sign of your friendship firm and true. You narrate the story superbly, dear Betty and I so enjoyed reading. I hope your dear friend was feeling much better next day and you were able to go to the park again. Lovely work and thank you for sharing, Betty...

Betty,
Aw, I'm laughing because when i went to my mom whining about one kind of scrape or another, if there were no bones showing and just a minimum of blood, she always said the same thing, ""You'll be all right, walk it off."
I did and I was...

That's what friends are for, isn't it? To limp along with them, not to mock but to maybe make them smile at being twinzies!
Now I'm wishing I still had a scooter. Can you imagine the look of bewilderment from all the kids you zoomed by and double takes it would cause now? 😃
