SILVER HAIR

SILVER HAIR

A Poem by Betty Hermelee
"

pre-mature

"
my best friend in middle school had silver hair
the only one in the class
sometimes classmates referred to her as an old lady
down to her bottom she flipped it around to show the length
she certainly stood out in the whole school
though she flaunted it and and ignored the negative remarks
the bottom line: her mom was also had silver hair in middle school
what can you do if it’s hereditary? be proud that you are so unique!

Mine was golden then turned dark some call it mousy

About thirty it came back lighter
Now it is white as wind blow snow
And just as unruly

Thank you for your very relatable review
Warmly B🌷🌷🌷
Enjoyed your writing dear Betty! I had a school friend who had hints of peppery hair from school day itself and very early on all it became a very salty look. His mom too had dense all grey hair. But to this day they have such a youthful face and the grey cover looks handsome on them giving an intellectual appeal. Some people are poised and know to carry themselves well. Very graceful poem , It also makes us think how to take things positively no matter how much negativity is around.. Thankyou dear for a lovely poetry.

This poem is a touching tribute to individuality, resilience, and friendship. The speaker’s admiration for their friend’s silver hair, a rare and beautiful trait that drew attention, resonates throughout. Lines like *“down to her bottom she flipped it around to show the length”* capture a sense of confidence and pride, while *“she flaunted it and ignored the negative remarks”* speaks to her strength in the face of teasing. The conversational tone gives it an honesty and simplicity that makes it feel relatable and heartfelt.

The theme of embracing what makes us unique recalls the work of poets like Naomi Shihab Nye and Jacqueline Woodson, who often celebrate individuality and identity with warmth and acceptance. The closing line, *“be proud that you are so unique!”* leaves readers with a sense of empowerment and positivity. Overall, this is a charming, affirming piece that reminds us of the beauty in our differences and the strength in owning them.

I never complain about my silver hair. I've seen too many guys younger than me with none at all.

I have silver hair...and told someone at our grocery store today that I wondered if he would card me if I bought cigarettes.
He said their new rules might tell him he has to. So, I told him I was really 20 years old but had an ID that said I was 74.
Yes, if it is inherited be Proud.
I am happy I still have my hair...no matter what color.
