ARRIVED

ARRIVED

A Poem by Betty Hermelee
"

time is moving!

"

I cease to anticipate my hotel stay

indeed i dread it

my anxiety heightens

amid  the episode of stomach butterflies

and I feel a bit queasy

straight off I come closer to a visit

with my darling soldier

The cab driver deposits me in front

of a four-story gray building

he fetches my baggage and other accessories

up the steps to the front door

my hands quiver as I give him a tip

for his pleasantries

Droplets of sweat on my forehead

are sure to fall swiftly past my eyelashes

to touch down on the step

I ring the doorbell and retrieve my hanky

to pat my face dry

I query whether someone takes note

of my very slightly swollen belly

I attempt to conceal it with my baggy coat

A tall young woman with jet black hair

opens the front entrance

she smiles and welcomes me

I return the grin, all the while quavering inside

she takes my coat and hangs it in the hall closet

I assume she observes my appearance

halting at my small pouch

then down to my swollen legs

she asks if I would like some tea

I reply absolutely

she smiles and disappears

I sense an awkwardness suffering

through these niceties

when truthfully, I wish for a bed

to rest my fatigued body

Yes, she is worn out poor girl but the truth of the matter will be revealed soon...

By now, she's very very conscious of her appearance and you've brought that out so effectively in this chapter. Being obviously pregnant in a strange city couldn't be very comfortable and the reader feels the unease. Perhaps, the lady at the entrance has indeed noted her state...

The hotel seems so nice, the way you describe it.

I read on with much interest...

This plants the seeds of curiosity. The soldier, the belly... my imagination takes me to a reunion of lovers and perhaps a soldier's surprise at discovering the pending package.
Nicely written.

You're welcome 🙂
The young lady's ordeal continues. She is showing now, although it's still barely noticeable. Still, she is almost paranoid about what people might be seeing. I am not sure where the scene describe here is, but the lady with whom she interacts gives no hint she suspects something. Still, our heroine remains uptight. I have the feeling she is in store for more difficulties.

You nailed it John! Thanks for always writing a very clear review!

Difficult moments layered over excitement and anticipation lead to exhaustion and very complex emotional moments. The thought comes of what next but that latter for now just rest. Nice build up.
