NIGHT MUSIC

NIGHT MUSIC

A Poem by Betty Hermelee
"

haunting cries in the night, befriended photo by Alpha Coders

"

Icy breaths spew steam on the snowy

mountaintops

wind whips among the crooked trees

wolves scream in the black of night

echoes between flat crevice rocks

sheer drop to the earth

I listen to these voices every night, my window cracked open

I am surprised at different tones coming from up high

and wonder what this chatter means

I fear the wolves are not hearty and

are unable to weather the frigid

like me when I am in the cold trying to find them

these misty songs are my only friends, my night music

My older sister deserts me every eve

after she tucks me in bed

at that time, I crack the window

and lend an ear to the eerie cry of love

almost like my spooky cries of loneliness

we are friendless night creatures

who have never seen each other

I agree! I admit I don't always think about wild animals. The elements they have to endure are tremendous. And us humans are taking away their homes and hunting grounds with our need for more houses, businesses and buildings.
Enjoyed reading this.

You are always welcome

I can see clearly where the inspiration for these fine words were conceived and a fair shiver they gifted me this fine winters morn .. and although I no longer have it, the howling of distant wolves and the barking of jackals was a strange source of comfort when I had my old place high up in the Bulgarian Stara Planina Mountains .. Warmly & Best, Neville

I lived in the country for a time, I remember the sound of crickets and fisher cats... now I'm back in the city so it's the sound of traffic all night... wonderful piece Betty,

Not quite in the same league but my eldest brother, according to mum, used to have an imaginary donkey friend at the bottom of our garden and every evening before his bedtime mum had to traipse, his hand held in hers, to the donkeys home to wish him good night. I know not what she he grew out of this but inwardly hope it was before he entered his late teens:))
Another well written, atmospheric piece Betty

You say you went looking for the wolves? And you're still with us? Maybe they were dieting that day.

It is cool to hear the sounds of nature. I have 180 acres of Ojibwa land in my name. Safe haven for the free animals. I adore the Wolves and Coyotes song. A wonderful poem shared dear Betty.
