BROKEN FENCE

BROKEN FENCE

A Poem by Betty Hermelee
"

A flaw in the bond...

"

BROKEN FENCE

A broken fence

a flaw in a sisterly bond

siblings on two planets far from each other

in childhood we were never snug

she, with knee-jerk temper

me, hiding behind the stairwell in fear

Today I mourn for her life

loner with dog

conversation cuts off the blood flow

inept to share what is deep in the

abyss of her inner core

she disguises behind the thick skin

of remoteness

stoic with shadows locked up

for safe keeping

One can find no embrace

into her sphere

into her heart

no elbow room for me

the fence may never mend

Sometimes, family members aren't the easiest or the nicest beings to get along with. Many families are dysfunctional to one extent or the other. The pain of coping with this situation can't be imagined. You want that connection so badly because family members are supposed to be pals. Right? But then for an unexplainable or even seemingly stupid reason, the relationship isn't working. You are either fighting constantly or your relationship seem frosted by an emotional glacier.
The pain doesn't heal. So at times, family members withdraw into an emotional shell or even cut off all contacts in order to maintain a little sanity.

“The thick skin of remoteness”
I don’t know why I love that line so…. Perhaps it’s because I’m guilty of it at times.
You describe the desire to mend this relationship so well.
I wish I had some nails to give you to help fix that fence.

Sad yet beautifully expressed. (One can find no embrace into her sphere into her heart) Far too many people live this way. Such a shame. ~Sharon

Thank you ! you as well!
This is so sad. Incredibly so. I can empathise because I no longer see or talk to my sister. But as they say I don't think I could verbalise the pain as well.

It is more than sad. When you see part of your own heart in another that had become a stranger to you.
Your poem is powerful.

No broken fence here Betty

After 60 years
We are still the same pepole > but some days

When reading this I could not help but think of my brother. He was an enigma to me. Remote, distant, lacking all ability to understand the sister who was his polar opposite. Four years older and worlds away in spirit, so often I felt like an only child. He died suddenly in 2018, and it felt like he was never there. I rarely thought of him, and he rarely thought of me. I am still struck by the strangeness of it all. How could we have inhabited the same house, the same world, and still be total strangers? Never stop trying to mend that fence. Or, if mending is not possible, learn a lesson from it.
