"

the gentleman's dinner

"

FIRST  FIRST DATE

Upon my extremely irrational decision

to attend the captain’s dinner

my nerves are particularly fretful

I pace the corridors, search my wardrobe

out for a breath of fresh air

I still worry about my judgement

nothing more to mutter

Now I must adorn myself

with the loveliest garments I own

along with my finest jewelry

I feel like a teenager on her first date

with nerves at highest tension

silly as it may seem

he is expected at six o’clock

I be-deck in a green satin low-neck dress

just below the knee

not to worry, my chest shall be shrouded

with magnificent sea pearls

nay too enticing

black hosiery, with matching heels

wool shawl, supposing we stroll the deck after dinner

Well, here we are in the great hall dining room

to shake hands with the captain at any moment

after which we sit at our reserved table for two

with glasses of champagne awaiting our first sip

Our dining experience is pleasurable with

goodly conversation

he continues to gaze at my eyes

in between chatter and smiles

I must confess tis a bit uncomfortable

all things considered with my soldier’s condition

yet I am not alone

I don't think I've had this many reviews for any poem I've written and Patricia's comment says it all.
I am afraid I have lost the all about in your soldier associated relationship however this reminds me of Robert De Niro reserving the entire ballroom for he and his lady love in 'Once Upon a Time in America'
Another besty from BESTB

The complexity of human emotions, from nervousness and anticipation to the awkwardness of trying to make a connection while dealing with personal challenges. Beautiful writing, Dear Betty!

dearest Betty… we are attracted to Captains who are responsible for our Crossing… each passenger has a destination… a Seafaring Adventure is to be expected. The Kindness of an Invitation.. will calm your Sea of Emotions. tenderly, Pat

I notice in this installment there was no mention of her wounded soldier until the very end. I feel her shipmate friend is going to continue making her uncomfortable until she is either comfortable or repentant.

a real write. a good write. whew - would be nice to finally relax, let down our guard and just be ourselves after all of the pomp and circumstance. it's funny, some of the best memories i have are informally eating with the people i care about - like impromptu picnics outdoors at places we enjoy and frequented. 'tis usually better when we are not alone ... :)

She needs to be careful or make a decision one way or the other or she may find herself alone at the end of this. : ) Fun read once again Betty.
