PRELUDEA Poem by Betty HermeleeStay Calm
After considerable muddling I locate a ship to depart for London In two days hence I ought to prepare for this long-desired journey the exhilaration in me flies like a hawk circling my house I sense my heart thump in anticipation Notions about what to pack up Scuttle through my psyche
I shall visit my armoire And scour my proper outfits I bundle some garments to pack In my old wooden trunk And whack it down tight
Afterwards I rest on it And imagine all eventualities That may well befall me Such like my dear one dies Though that idea is too dreadful Or he does not distinguish me Or my soldier fails to love me
These reflections could plant my soul In profound darkness Inept to untangle a web of sorrow I shall not sanction that to happen I had better regard the cloudless slope
