ANTICIPATION

ANTICIPATION

A Poem by Betty Hermelee
"

what to expect

"

I hasten to open the door

fling my wet towel over the kitchen chair

next, I unfasten the telegram

and quickly note the word “shot”

while I continue to read to the end

Fiancé shot in abdomen and right foot

Stable condition. Will remain in hospital.”

My mouth opens with a cough

I feel flush and fragile

no word from my soldier in weeks

poor darling, he must be in torment

I am so prideful of his accomplishments

and long to channel my fancies to him straightaway

yet I must show my composure

I ought to be with him at hospital

support him, care for him, treasure him

tis an overwhelming task

to obtain all the particulars for my sojourn

oh! I just aspire to float on a cloud to whisk

me to his bedside

Upon catching my breath

I shall initiate a plan

a vast ocean to traverse

the fastest ship I shall book without delay

It's so difficult to hear something bad happening to your beloved. Always too hard to resist, and if you're far from them, it's like the same damage they are going through. Both suffers, it they physically, then you emotionally.
Being distant, prayers work.
Hoping of a happy ending.
A good one of among those I had gone through.
Thanks for the art.

Well, the next to worst possible did happen. Shot in one foot and in the abdomen. The foot wound probably can be managed, but a German bullet in the gut is cause for deep concern. The speaker is not exactly panicked, but feels an overwhelming need to get overseas and at her lover's side. At last look, she is starting the wheels turning.

I felt this section needed to establish a new impediment to overcome, in the true sequel tradition.
