A Poem by Betty Hermelee

mental illness has been overlooked for decades

Her brilliant mind incites at night

Sleep disconnects into clutter

And lassitude ascents in her flight

Her passion ensues in a stutter

Nightmares, delusions, hallucinations

A swell of confusions justified

A melting pot of imaginations

She’s on a psycho circus ride

More grass to touch

Bulbs to plant

Love of nature as such

When on high her whiff is a pant

More sustenance to eat

Of the earth’s gift to her

And her figure endures memorable defeat

As her cat jumps to the food, purr

More poetry to puzzle and write

often dreams omens of dark

She is blessed with an incredibly fascinating brain

She could be witch-like and sneer with a bark

After an implausible elevated state

She is befuddled and absorbed in a maze

One which she deems to emulate

But when she is on a high her brain turns sideways

Time after time an aura of exhaustion

She sustains into a cryptic doze

With her eyes at a winkle

She can still manipulate and oppose

Yet not for long as her eyes overt

Quick actions of muttering dismay

Ultimately, she manipulates to hurt

But her family shall not betray

The human mind an enigma still in modern times as it was way back when mankind became aware of its own intelligence, on any level of society none are immune from breakdown, overload, mental-meltdown, and as such must be given due care and room to recover..

Your metaphor marvellous, image inspiring, expressive poem accentuates and highlights such relent guidance!!

Thank you Tom for a very thoughtful review!
Best, B. (and now we're friends)
Sounds like a maze of emotions flowing together to create words of the light of passion. Slowly turning into a downward spiral of depression ;-] Nice expression.

Sounds like many people I know. I think we all have something that would fall under this classification, it is just in some it is more pronounced and visible. I catch myself often doing things that I would call "Weird" and I wonder about my own state of mind. I do know that mental illness is an important subject that really needs to be tended to. I enjoyed the calamity of your poem Betty and found it kind of fun prior to understanding the message behind it,

We all suffer mood swings but when this crosses over to the extreem and impairs our functioning we call it bipolar. Just like every other disorder that crosses that line it is frustrating, and debilitating and this write explaines it well from a first person point of view. Nicely done.

Thanks Soren for your review; It's in my family, very difficult....Best, B
This reminds me of Kay Redfield Jamieson's brilliant book, an unquiet mind of just how many directions your own mind can pull in without rhyme or reason, seemingly like a jukebox permanently set on random.
She is the leading expert in bipolar and other mood disorders, having suffered from it herself.
It should be compulsory reading in all schools and dispels many myths too, as well as giving expert insight into something still too unspoken that let's other sufferers know she hears you.
Sorry, I didn't intend this to sound like an amazon review, but 5 stars... Well impressed. 😊

The condition described here can only be bipolar disorder. It consists of summits and pits and is a lethal threat. The poem well describes the states these people endure. It can be controlled by medication, but even when compliant, stress can cause a relapse. Their families go through hell trying to help them.

Sounds like the essence of bipolar disorder. There is a magazine-Awakening Review-that is dedicated to mental illness. Comes out twice a year and looks for poetry submissions.
