THE DIVIDE

THE DIVIDE

A Poem by Betty Hermelee
"

our democracy at stake

"

THE DIVIDE

Many speak of running away

From fear of violence and hate

Not to meddle in the fray

Or to be akin to the bait

Racist theories abound

From near to far and wide

It turns heads to astound

Those who espouse divide

Malicious groups will kill

For their misaligned cause

A twisted inbred thrill

To undermine the laws

The anger sets the stage

For the groupies to arm

Shown on many platforms

Their main goal is to harm

Civil war floats in the air

The pundits let us know

Right and left speak beware

Shall we keep the status quo?

Hence, we can sustain democracy

Albeit, one must use their right to vote

Or all of us will be ensconced in autocracy

And have a sword shoved down our throat

No tolerance for lies or fraud

In that we may hasten our move abroad

The hate and the entirety of chaos that these elections and politics is ridiculous and frightening. Dangerous, not even to mention. ‘A twisted inbred thrill to undermine the laws.’ If that isn’t the truth, hah, I don’t know what is. Our democracy is indeed at stake, and it’s sickening to watch these people in power argue like children with toys than paying attention to the starving, dying, suffering people around them. Thank you for sharing.

Thank you for your reply, review Cat... I felt the need to speak out!! Best to you,
B.
I was in a store. I heard a man tell someone. I must buy more bullets. Election is coming. Dear Betty, most boring election ever. Nothing had changed. Half and half in Senate and House of Rep. Two more years of arguments and nothing will be done. Yesterday and today. USA is the same. We are safe in the USA. Our children, too lazy to create change. I enjoyed the poetry. I don't pay attention to the naysayers. Hello from Michigan dear Betty. Still quiet in the USA. Thank you for sharing the outstanding poetry and your thoughts.

You have expressed a mouthful.
I am not an American so don't really feel any right to express my opinion, but what I see in the U.S. political situation, I find both dangerous and incredible.

In the real civil war there were reasons-not good-still actual reasons: the south had an economic reason in that they wanted free slave labor.

But now the divide feels unsustainable as “I don’t like you” seems less of a motivation.

Hopefully sanity overwhelms at the ballot box else those movies about zombies like World War Z will have escaped their fictional bonds.

I think your title is perfect for the poem about the state of our country right now. I do not believe I have ever seen such political hate floating across the airwaves as I have seen over the past several years and it all seems to be coming to a head. Kind of scary times regardless of which way one votes.
