A CUPFUL OF PLEASANT

A CUPFUL OF PLEASANT

A Poem by Betty Hermelee
"

a special evening

"

A CUPFUL OF PLEASANT

As of late I agonize

about my memory decline

as though my mind stifles in a prisoner’s cell

words drift and obscure

arduous to retrieve

conversations broken

not smooth like a laminated table

alone, I speak to myself

words flow like a melodious stream

I am distressed about my waning life

isolated in an old woebegone cabin by the sea

At once, my scratched wooden windows rattle

and abruptly catch my focus

as I peer out to uncover

wind carries the aqua waves at speed

a strange, mysterious evening

White caps swell in chaotic gestures

as though in storm

yet the yellow-hued moon

glimpses through cumulus clouds

to alight the jagged sea

In the distance

I discern a sailboat at tilt

bobs on the intense current

I wonder why one would sail

in such a turbulent swell?

though at close aspect

I would designate this night

as remarkable

an abstraction of evening’s magic

light from the heavens is so distinct

it brings life to a painted canvas

If I pass on tonight

I will have witnessed

the most divine panorama

I am not sure which I preferred more, the painting or the poetry as they both were absolutely wonderful. And I can relate as I feel I have seen the most amazing sites one could see in a lifetime and if tonight is to be my night, then I go happily.

The poetry was so wonderful dear Betty. I loved how you described the wild sea. You allowed the reader see the storm. Thank you dear friend for sharing the amazing poetry and your thoughts.

I do really like this piece, Betty...I am reminded of "Message in a Bottle."

that haunting sea, the turbulent swell...and then silence.

I can't testify as to your memory, but your written words here are quite sharp. The description of the sea at night is very vivid. We can almost see the jagged waves and the boat that is being tossed upon them. The whole scene has an almost mystical feeling about it. The last verse communicates the compensatory quality of this vision.

A scene full of tension, melancholy and mystery, well depicted with well chosen words! It ends on an uplifting note, even though the sense of melancholy is still there. A most interesting write!

This is quite the tale beginning with worry and self-absorption then transforming into a mystical experience that transports self into an acceptance. And it reads beautifully.

My love of poetry results from my love of art. As a painter I am able to express myself on a canvas. As a poet my words come from my heart, my moods, sometimes sad, mostly upbeat. I like to use vivid .. more..
