MOODS OF HER DOMAIN

MOODS OF HER DOMAIN

A Poem by Betty Hermelee
"

THE EXQUISITE AZORES

"

MOODS OF HER DOMAIN

For eternity

she was born to own

and cherish these islands

where deep coves scrub

the rocky shore

swathes of lava hug the seaboard

ancient volcanoes dapple the land

Her moods oscillate from enraged

and wrathful waves

as she batters the cliffs

like the might of a lioness

who sprints to seize her prey

yet, at sunset her tone whirls to placid ripples

as the moon peers from above

and controls her temper

Wind is her staff of life

and in the frigid whips through the fragile green

To twist and turn them relentlessly

for these islands are but specks

in a gargantuan sea

Misty skies undulate near to fabricate

opaque fog which hovers over the steep highlands

and green meadows dotted with cows

Nonetheless with all her strength

the gentle peoples adulate her

for she renders that for which

they cannot live without

millions of edible sea creatures

which sustain their existence

Interesting paen to nature and very visual in its structure. The coast looks a lot like my Scottish coast about a mile from where I live.

Personification of nature is a powerful way to discover a voice for our humanity. Nature speaks openly the secrets we struggle to discover within ourselves. You mixed and melted different creatures and elements of nature as well to speak your heart.
The last two lines felt like something redundant and better left to understanding. Just my gut reaction. The whole poem was dreamy. You spoke with keen observations as well. Then the last two lives just felt dull in comparison. Does this make sense?

Thank you for sharing your work. I enjoyed the read.

Wonderful and imaginative description Betty. You took me there. The moods of the sea can really fluctuate as you have penned here. If this is where you went on holiday, then lucky you. A fabulous write dear poet.

I love Portugal, have been many times often holidaying on the silver coast which at times has the wild seas you describe. Welcome home Betty, good to read your words:))
