SWEET-SCENTED GRASS

SWEET-SCENTED GRASS

A Poem by Betty Hermelee
"

we are destroying the homes of many gentle, and splendid creatures

"

SWEET- SCENTED GRASS

A long journey I declare

This stretch through the brambles

Should lead to my old pasture

My thirst exhausts me

Yet I am drawn to the scent of warm, damp grass

And I anticipate the dilapidated

Red barn to be upright

As I snort, the leaves tickle my nostrils

In a blur I see a clearing

But still some distance

Veils my clarity

As I determine the spectacle of buildings

Are my whereabouts incorrect?

Certain to follow the only path

For creatures like me

Ultimately and to my astonishment

The red barn, the watering hole

And the sweet-scented grass is extinct

What I discern is house after house

Dispersed, all identical with paltry grass

A virtual devastation up ahead

I bow in repulse, chestnut mane blankets my eyes

Humans shatter my pasture home

Suppose others are comparable

Perhaps I will seek a stream

Somewhere in the woods

To quench my craze

I sense entrapment, annihilation

Darkness us upon me

I should bed down for the night

Where I live in Michigan, the forest was once near. Now you must travel 15 miles to find the forest and the farms. I can go the Great Lakes, at least. Thank you dear friend for sharing the amazing poetry and your thoughts.

You’re very welcome dear poet!

From the point of view of the horse...the loss of his beloved pasture and his safe area...the old red barn. Kind of sad in a way, progress makes changes where sometimes, no change is needed. Nicely done.

Lovely Betty. You have captured the pathos of a generation who has no barn.

I love this poem Betty. Maybe because I so identify with the unnamed roan so lost wandering places known in search of the old red barn.

Mankind thinks he/she is the most important thing on the planet (if not the universe!), but all creatures have as much right to this planet as mankind! Here in Britain, we have areas of green belt, where development is banned. But developers can contest these areas, and some of them are eventually sold for the development of homes or industrial estates. Our green belt areas are shrinking year by year! A great piece of social commentary poetry, Betty!

Glad to hear you had a great European trip. My wife and I have recently returned from two memorable weeks in the magical Italian resort of Sorrento. Our fourth trip there - we love it!

What a beautiful and emotion filled write my friend. I could feel the deep disappointment of the bewildered steed as he views the atrocities mankind has had on his home. I love this one Betty. ~Sharon

This poem is enchanting and so enthralling, I had to reread it. I loved the word choices and the visuals. I felt very lost in the poem, in its own little world. I loved the message though. And the length was perfect, definitely one I’ll add to my favorites.’Red barn to be upright’ that line is particularly inspiring to me. Thank you for sharing!
