SHADOWS

SHADOWS

A Poem by Betty Hermelee
"

a farewell...

"

SHADOWS

As the loaded ferry exits from the dock
his face fades, melts into the sea and sky
A sense of loss dangles in the humid air
nought matters as she dabs a drop from her eye
as if a deep vacuum shrouds her listless body
she gazes out to a desolate sea on end
time is meaningless, though nightfall greets

poetry is her nearest friend
in part, due to her soul's vacuity
she harvests her words
in love letters to her sailor boy
fervor gushes from her pen
ink seeps on her dainty fingers
she scribes from midnight until dawn
emotions unrestrained
the last line with her head on the pillow
nearly scrawl, unsigned, though he perceives
exhaustion thrashes her core
eyelids flutter
and close to a deep slumber

Thank you so much for stopping by and reviewing my poem, most appreciated!
Betty
I really like the tone you managed in this one, the sense of missing is palpable. I question the diction and syntax of the third line(dangle feels awkward to me): if you reverse that line and begin with “The humid air”could that lead to a less awkward line? Just my take, You don’t have to agree. :-)

This has that beautiful, deep flair your poetry always has. It seemed extra strong here and I loved the way you described writing. I know I’ll always connect with a fellow poet when they talk about writing poetry like this. You understood the full form and how therapeutic it is and how ecstasy-like it is to get your words on pages. The love the woman feels here is strong and shines through the pages. The structure is great and the emotions are just beautiful. Thank you for sharing!

I like the way the poem is divided into two verses, departure and writing - action and reaction, this makes sense and it gives it good structure and easy to read

Thank you for a thoughtful review!
Quite a powerful and descriptive turn in this piece. It shows the essence of anguish of the sense of loss. Very well done

it sounds like this an unwanted, emotional departure
Unfortunately, life can sometimes get in the way
On the lighter side, this was the first time I'd seen the word vacuity used
Living in an area overrun with ferries, I enjoyed the image and hope she realizes that ferries also bring loved ones back again
