I never fancied fighting
in war; rage, bloodshed, potential early death. I am a man of peace, reflection
and learned in Greek and Roman History. In no case would I have joined the army,
and by sheer luck was not tortured into that tangle of war ego.
I raised my family to be
free thinkers, peace- lovers, and to select their faith and education. Each
chose their own and all finished high school. Two went off to higher education
and two did not. Each decided their own future.
My mood altered as I aged
and matured into an older, wiser man.
I recognize too much
suffering around the world. Though I’m not a fighter, my spirit compels me to
help support those in need. It’s timely to retire from teaching and begin
humanitarian work. I reach out to several international volunteer
organizations, only to be informed that I am past the age to be a volunteer
abroad. I am crushed by this lowdown.
Why did I not consider
this as a younger man? To be deprived of giving back to mankind?
To me, this is a lesson in
life. Do not delay in fulfilling your aspirations. Now, as an aged soul, I call
to mind my life’s accomplishments and, be that as it may, I am truly gratified.
Hi Betty,
The desire to do more is want counts...even if it a bit too late... Wishing one could have...would have is useless...as we get older we all realise this.
I never find time to read stories...but since this one is from you I decided..heck, why not.
I really enjoyed the thoughts that went into your use of words.
Yes, the speaker is correct ..do what you need to do...want to do...
No matter what the age it really is never too late... hey..look at Grandma Moses..
I really loved this read of yours...probably because it is so very true.

I am so glad you loved it...I loved writing it!!
Lisa, almost dinner time in Spain
This is really, truly a very nice and concise peace full of heartwarming notions and acts of humanity. I love how the man realized it’s never too late to do what you love, and what’s right in the world. If so many more people followed this sentiment, this would be a much more beautiful place to live. This certainly is a lesson in life. Also very well written, super smooth and easy to follow! Thank you so much for sharing.

Wow! Another great review from you! I thank you from my heart….

I think the speaker should be glad in his accomplishments, service to humanity or not. Besides, you don't have to join the Peace Corps to alleviate human suffering. There are many local organizations that accept older volunteers and do much to help others. And you don't have to risk getting amoebic dysentery.

I know, but it's just a story! And the reader wanted to go abroad.....
you're welcome!
Lovely sentiments and really well-executed. It reads easily and well. Nicely done, Betty. There is an argument with self you could explore in this poem-how much credit is given for progeny. Not everyone is a parent. :-)

My love of poetry results from my love of art. As a painter I am able to express myself on a canvas. As a poet my words come from my heart, my moods, sometimes sad, mostly upbeat. I like to use vivid .. more..
