A SONOROUS BREATH

A SONOROUS BREATH

A Poem by Betty Hermelee

A SONOROUS BREATH

The sun awakens from a restless sleep

Strains to ascend in primordial day.

Leaves dance to a sprightly birdsong

A momentary wind stirs them

Dark green to sunlight’s reflection

they evince their blush so artistically

I embody this wind

A sonorous breath floods my lungs

And, for a quick second

My heart skips a beat

It sparks a fleeting fright

Until I keep in mind my yesteryear

I recall these tango beats

Decades ago

When my lover would fondle my core

These were remarkable instants

The innocence of our kinship

We shared not an epoch courtship

He was snatched from part of me

In the First World War

Countless years

My heart has not flickered

Up till this day, this instant

Brings to mind the wind

The waltzing leaves and his irrefutable caress

The imagery and visuals in these words are splendid. It doesn’t even feel like reading, it just feels like experiencing and living the emotions that created this poem in the first place. It has a perfect amount of intense emotion, portrayed through words so well. Each line feels important and the last few lines especially tie it together so well. Thank you so much for sharing.

deeply personal feel to this .. to have loved so brightly so long ago and not since is triply sad says i! i want to say i am sorry for your loss .. the write seems to tenderly personal .. so i will just say it is very sad those decades lived without such special love and partnership

Love can be sad, and can cause great pain - especially if the object of our affections is taken from us during an act of war. Sadly, this has happened to millions of people over the years. A highly poignant poem, and an artistically well-constructed one also!

Ahhh, romance dear Betty... such a lovely piece of writing... such engaging words of yours portray the feelings so well.
Wars, no matter when have destroyed many budding romances..
Thank you for sharing your lovely poem...

Your welcome
War has a bad habit of abruptly ending romances. The speaker here is one now advanced in age, who can yet recall the enchantment she felt briefly for a young man who was taken away, like too many, by WW1. I imagine there were many woman, now long gone, who experienced similar memories.

Wow... you are a perennial flower that blooms every Year...
now suddenly we have unusual unexpected Winds that touch you deeply as though thunder and lightening could bring back YesterYear. Your poetry is an awakening of coming events where Worlds collide and and Spirits appear... It brings Teardrops a year or two later. Politics are crumbling and disturbing. Yesterday and Today we had Pouring Rain that flooded for an hour and suddenly stopped. It became very Dark for about thirty Minutes and then the Sun came out very Bright.... especially today, June 12, 2022.
We live in Virginia. There were unusual Storms in Florida and the Carolinas were hit with lots of Rain. We must be prepared and believe that there is a Power greater than Politics and Wars. This is my humble feeling. gently, Pat
