SHADES OF INDIGO BLUE

SHADES OF INDIGO BLUE

A Poem by Betty Hermelee
"

marriage, bumpy road....

"

Sixteen years of wed, shades of indigo blue

Jumbled emotions of trust, union, respect, passion

Bearing children

Or not

Encumbrance is a heavy truckload

Eighteen wheels churn in their minds

Questioning the big proposal

Shall we

Or not

Bumping along after seven

They enter upon a nail in the tire

Flat and tired

The marriage bites

Into crumbs of a blueberry muffin

He returns home later than usual

A blank stare upon his face

She suspects

Will she query his tardiness?

No word

Hence

He begs for a leave of absence

Of course not, she mutters

Why would you consider?

Silence

Choppy, foamy waves roll by

Telephone whispers

Key crunches the door knob late in the eve

He inquires once more

To take a leave

Her frown is ample

He masters her pain

Tastes her want

Yet, in his eyes the wedlock has decomposed

He acquiesces yet again

Her tired face lifts to view her red devil eyes

One Sunday eve

He mutters he has a business trip

As he prepares to leave

He snaps, his tears on her neck

As he grips her frail core

An embrace of soft violet

Shall he return?

Or not

This is a amazing story in the poetry. I love how you set-up the story and the language you used. Had a Alan Poe feel to the words.
"Shall he return?
Or not"
The ending, perfect dear Betty. Thank you for sharing the outstanding poetry.

A beautifully written, but heartbreaking story that I can tell you put your whole storytelling soul into. This really is a tale of push and pull, and unfortunately it seems someone let go and left the other to fall, and get back up on their own. I love how you mixed the story with the poem, yet still keeping with your poetic voice and metaphors. This is such a powerful piece and anyone who is still hanging onto outdated things would benefit from reading. A heartbreaking poem, but full of wisdom. Thank you so much for sharing.

in three tries, never got this far...perhaps my wedding car is just a lemon.
and we ask ourselves, should it be this much work?
I really like the story blended into this poem.

I’m not sure what to expect when I read the title, such a beautiful and sad color but it certainly suits this poem. It’s so well done and emotionally painful but so beautifully written that makes it so touching in so many ways. I’m actually flabbergasted by this piece and that rarely happens, my jaw actually dropped in awe. Dang B. you caught me off guard and I love it!!! Should he return? He should not, set her free to find what she needs if he can’t be it.
