DARLING

DARLING

A Poem by Betty Hermelee
"

love poem based on a song

"

DARLING

My darling

how shall I absolve myself

I let you wander to a star- lit sphere

I gave you to the wings of a hawk

to fly you through the breezes of time

where may I seek you?

hence, my life a shadow of myself

My heart shakes alone my sweet

I cry all night with my loss

when I awaken, my spirit worsens

I can’t meet the day

I remember a face

that must be yours

happy people pass me by

I stand on the edge of life

I sent you away

your passion was all mine

you offered your soul, your flesh

unconditionally

Your kiss, calm as glass

a feeling I possessed you

though I was selfish

fate is to yield your return

I crave you at this moment

what a great poem over a great song and songwriter. oh that yearning never dies, it yields but never dies. such a hard pill to swallow when you realize that you are suddenly old and there is nothing to be done of it. I'm still gulping glasses of water to choke it down. great piece

Most Songs are Poetry... if we live in present time...
with sentimental feelings... like the embrace of aging Wine.

Will have to listen to the song, which by the way will be totally against the grain as Manilow is totally not my bag, to understand how your words fell from listening to his:)
Hope you are well

Thank you for your honest review!

I remember listening to this song incessantly becuz I could not resist the heart-yanking pain of how it makes a listener feel. You've captured that same yearning suffering yowling sensation that unrequited love used to deliver back in the day (before we became tough ole birds) *hee! hee!*

You’re right Margie, no more heart yanking, will just have to listen to him over and over; thanks .. read more
And I'm listening to the words of this love song and applying it to myself. And finding lots of points of contact.

and that song is supposedly about a dog...but I wonder...

beautiful song...
and I really like the poem....isn't so true, when we are at our loneliest and unhappiest...others always seem to be smiling, rejoicing, loving...
"Oh, Mandy, you came and you gave without taking, and I sent you away"

Lovely review J…. I didn’t know about the dog!

This one is the voice of regret. The speaker, for reasons unnamed, has made a breach with one once beloved. Perhaps this occurred in a moment of passion, as the result of hard words exchanged. Now, at a later time, the mistake is realized, the loss understood. Romantic love does suck at times.

You could not have picked a better sad love song than this all time classic. I loved Barry Manilow's music growing up. He sure could sing a good heartbreaking song with the best of them. This poem truly does pay tribute to that classic "Mandy". Thank you B for sharing your work with us.
