THE GRADUATE (re-invented)A Poem by Betty HermeleeGraduation prideTHE GRADUATE (Re-invented)
Three days of pelting rain Our anxiety peaks The universe is a blur Hence, at dawn on the noteworthy morn Sun’s rays kiss us With a sweet scent of dew Bird songs perform a symphony Butterflies surprise us A tepid spring day, remarkable for us Grandeur of floral decor Our hearts flutter about like hummers flying by
We pause, spirited to see the college graduation ceremony She, our only child, doting, proud parents We track down our stadium seats The band emits loud music Countless speeches proceed Alas, we view her from afar A dot in a sea of black hats With white tassels We access our opera glasses To bring her closest to us Tears dampen our cheeks Blurry vision fleetingly
The processional, pomp and glory We stare at each other in amazement Names shout out, biting our ears She anticipates her turn to walk Tall, regal, full smile on a dimpled cheek Hence, the point in time we’ve been awaiting As she accepts her diploma with elegance and esteem Our mood is a hybrid of loss and pride
