BRAIN BLIGHT

BRAIN BLIGHT

A Poem by Betty Hermelee
"

Struggles of an inmate

"

BRAIN BLIGHT

Boom bang might

It’s a busy brainy blight

Lights torture my eyes

As if it’s time to rise

Steel bars rattle

In truth there’s always a battle

Punch smack kick

What an utterly nasty trick

Steamy, hellish, acrid air

No mirror to view my sticky hair

Vulgar funky brown meat

I’ll dilly- dally next time I eat

My pants slip below my waist

I’m convinced the trigger is in the taste

I detect the semblance of gangs

At least they hide their gold-tinged fangs

Outside in the rec place

Where I join the rat race

Where we’re expected to savor fresh air

I hide like a lion in its own lair

Afraid to join, I’m an outcast

I watch the show, utterly aghast

they don't stop to think there
are consequences to the evil
men/ women do..they seal
their own fate behind prison

Thank you Fran for the thoughtful comment!

We, the general population are all too quick to think jail is hardly the deterrent it once was and is way too lenient these days, but put someone behind bars with nothing but their thoughts in the quiet of night and they'll begin to see where the actual punishment lies. And that's even before they enter the real zoo of mixing with the other inmates.
They should think about doing the crime having consequences a bit more before doing it, but then how quickly they forget the hell and all too soon become repeat offenders. The mind is a very strange place indeed, no doubt even more so behind bars.

Young people inclined to the criminal life should read this one. Suicide would be a welcome escape from such a life.
