LOST

LOST

A Poem by Betty Hermelee
"

searching for love

"

LOST

We owned a love once

It squandered over time

Remember our foreheads rubbed

Our cores heated under soft woolen blankets

Tawdry laughs until tears veiled our cheeks

Nights of silence, as we goggled into our eyes

Tasting each other’s fancies

Seated like yogis under a half moon twilight

Racing our old mares through rain-soaked fields

Partaking our picnic with fresh fruit

Dripping down our chins

We owned a love once

To be without you is half of me

I sense your void

It torments me

My misery reaches to the furthest star

I shan’t get my bearing

Wasted love is my undoing

I will carry on living as your shadow

Whilst we own our love once more

I can't believe you posted this bread image . . . I played their early stuff incessantly when all my friends were rockin' out to Led Zeppelin & Jimi Hendrix. I still have an urge to hide that I ever listened to bread! Anyhow, your poem is top-notch. The first stanza, especially, becuz you paint a bunch of imagery that's so relatable we can picture it in our minds, and yet, not one speck of the typical trite stuff people usually pull out of the closet to signify "the hippie days" or whatever. Great poem! (((HUGS)))

It begs the question, "Is it better to have love and lost than to have not loved at all?" Many would say "Yes". For good or bad, it's our nature to want to be loved. Personally, I never learned my lesson.

Hello Betty. I just love Bread, so thank you for bringing them back to me. Thank you also for your fine words on lost love. Sometimes you don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone.

We get two different views in this offering. The first stanza is memories of the past, when love was in bloom and the world seemed as though it couldn't get any better. Stanza two abruptly offers a stark contrast. Though not said specifically, we get the feeling the beloved has passed on, and the speaker comes across as one in mourning, living in "your void." The reference to "wasted love" may mean other, subsequent relationships that have been unsatisfactory. At any rate, the speaker is not not despairing, content to go on living as "your shadow." When the real thing is absent, sometimes memories have to suffice.

I so love the band Bread, especially their song "If". It is so haunting a melody and love song. This is a heart-rending poem that reflects on past moments of a once and still enduring love. You capture them so eloquently in word. Thank you, B, for sharing your art with us.
