ATTENTION PLEASEA Poem by Betty Hermeleeavailable to a deaf earATTENTION PLEASE
A lonely mangy cat Prowls from this house to that His hunger pains him his body incredibly thin He can survive on mice But would much prefer spice He is available to greet Alas, no one has offered meat Ignored by all His soul is not whole When angry he screams To unalterable extremes One neighbor in a huff Yelled out come here snuff I’ll give you some food If you modify your mood The cat scampered to the bowl And in it there was sole The old woman said scat Or Ill twist you into a rat
In a bar late at night A young man, pen in hand to write After much booze his head bobs up and down On his face is a notable frown A stunning woman sits beside Instead of chatting, she merely sighs He seeks great attention All that spews forth is pretension He looks her way As if to say “I am a drifter; do you care to join me?” “No”, she says, “I have no will to be free” He says he has naught Not even a thought “Okay don’t be so sad I’ll take you to my pad” “I’m hungry, and in need of food “Don’t be so pushy, you filthy dude.”
