TURMOIL

TURMOIL

A Poem by Betty Hermelee
"

Fighting Covid

"
My eyes convey the turmoil

For the rest of me hides behind it

One day my smile

will comfort

As soon as the sheath disappears

it is disheartening this new way of life. the mask hides subtle emotions like you a say a smile that can bring warmth. think we may be wearing it for longer than we care to.. it’s sad as you said ‘my eyes convey the turmoil’ well expressed

A Lady I met by chance.. sold me a homemade Mask where the area of the mouth
and expressions was encased with see through soft clear plastic of some sort. It
surely reveals your smile and also you can "read lips"... As to why this has not been
widely used is beyond understanding. tenderly, Pat

Such truth in your brief collection of words, Betty. Don't like wearing a mask, don't like to speak to people wearing masks, BUT have psyched myself into accepting the fact that if a mask helps cure our world then, we need to accept the damn things. I live in agricultural South England where living it up is living it down much of the time! We have more farm gates than pubs! Our corona virus numbers are low. People wear masks when and where necessary because they need go on living in order to make a living. Has worked so far. Needs considering by the thoughtless crazies that won't believe facts until they go down with them.. Fact. Agree with you entirely, but..

Sorry, have written a rambling tome where you've used twenty five understandable and powerfully expressed truth ! .

I still can't believe my eyes when I see pictures of the world in masks. I have not worn one & I never see anyone in masks around here, since people are spaced out in the wilderness, stand-offish by nature. I think your poem seems to convey that there's an elephant in the room (MASKS!) which you only refer to as "it" but "it" is so huge & unmistakable, it really does distract us from seeing what's behind those eyes, those lone portals of expression. Imagine a world with no smiles. I still can't imagine it (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

I agree. It looks like it's going to take awhile for the virus to clear up.
I thought at first that I was imagining people smiling behind masks, but the eyes have it and can't fake our true feelings, good or bad.
Am wondering if and when the day comes we are mask free, if it will feel as strange being without them as it was in the beginning to have them.
So well said in so few words, the thoughts that cross all our minds.

It's all in the eyes Betty. They mirror the soul. So much feeling in this little piece of brevity. I think many feel the same way.
