U PICK EM

U PICK EM

A Poem by Betty Hermelee
"

Nature, fruit, memories

"
Red, plum, juicy, sweet, a bit prickly
a wee green flower sits atop
I tiptoe carefully through
tiny earth paths between rows of bright red

I pick strawberries
when school is finished
and the hot sun reaches its peak
trees are heavy with leaves
some branches almost kiss the ground

My basket is always full
well, not quite
eat one, throw one in the bucket
I smear my lips shiny red
a mess on my freckled face
I lick them, afraid to lose a morsel

My grandma bakes strawberry pie
I stuff my mouth
globs of whipped cream

Okay, ready for more!!

This sounds wonderful and delicious. We went wild blackberry and blueberry picking as kids. My mom would make Black and Blue Pie with a mix of the berries... served hot with vanilla ice cream on top...okay, now I'm hungry. (smile) I enjoyed your poem.

You're welcome :)
Very cute poem in a child's POV. It's funny how small the world is when you're young.

thank you and this really was my young life!!
Nothing like fruit picking. We still pick our own strawberries from the farm fields in summer. I smiled at your basket. One for me, one for the basket. That's what I still do. This is a lovely memory of hot sun and strawberry picking and stained lips and fingers. We never had strawberry pie though. We always had ours topped with cream. I bet your Grandma's pie was delicious. I really enjoyed this delicious memory Betty. Thank you.

reminds me of being in the pasture in Vermont picking blackberries...and then Mrs. Gutterson would make pie from them...from basket to table...yummy,
