Day 9

Day 9

A Chapter by Sadie Cahill

I still felt reluctant about leaving the city. For now, I am camping underneath the shades of an overpass. Green growth surrounded my surroundings. Fire crackled as I picked at it making the surrounding shadows dance.

I sigh. My breath goes out in a thin mist. I have, perhaps, had managed to walk a few kilometers, but the towering buildings of the city that I had been in is still visible through a thin mist of fog. During the night, they stood like silent sleeping ruins at the distance.

I stoke the fire, embers move, sending sparks flying. The sight stirs my memory and I found myself reminiscing about the past. It wasn’t under an underpass but I had always spent camping with my family under a forest. We would eat chocolate and marshmallows, toasted in the fire and would sing merry songs.

This had been one of the most precious memories in my life. I know that I cherish it dearly, holding it close to my heart. The memory is as eternal, and I wondered how I had gotten tired of it.

Perhaps, now that I realize in shame, I am tired of it. Our life had been going downhill ever since I’ve been returning home from work, tired and my wife would mistrust me and ask me questions whenever I’m too tired to answer. I felt sad. I should have answered her back then.

Stray, who followed me on my journey, rested herself on my side, sleeping. The fire should last a few hours. I should rest.
