Life or Death?

Life or Death?

A Poem by Deepika

In some unusual moment I met with an accident,

Doctor says- time to face a fair game of Life and Death,

All that has gotta work now is my inner strength,

I'm given a choice between Elsewhere & the Earth!

One world comes into Life when I close my eyes,

The other one wants me to be wide-eyed and wise,

‘Elsewhere’ doesn't clear me if it's heaven or hell

Either of them is gonna give me some new thrill!

Heaven must be a delight to go as Dad would be awaiting there,

He must be bored without any dear ones to visit so far,

I can live those moments that just got rusted in my thoughts,

Or the ones that take birth just in my Dreams in the Night,

What if I end up in hell as I've been too fortunate so far?

I'll be bullied by that ruffian who’s sure to be weeping there,

Ahh.. these bumps have sufficiently shown me the hell,

“They'll only take away my breath”, with a pain I yell!

What would my mom do without me or Dad in this World,

Won't my siblings want those moments that'll soon turn old?

Forever my dreams will dissolve if I choose the former,

I would be a matter of gossip for some days to my Neighbor,

What if there's another layer between Life and Death?

Then my soul miserably floats like a weightless ghost!

Will that be an end of the concept of fate and faith?

Is there a way to come back here when I get bored at last!

While thoughts kept swirling, a nurse injected anesthesia,

They were all suppressed along with the days of insomnia!

Theres nothing like going under the surgeons knife to bring all to mind Deepika. The mundane is overtaken by the theological and philosophical, the ethereal and the unreal. This has some fine poginancy injected (sorry for that pun) but also feirly healthy helpings of humour also - I lolled at Old Nick being termed 'a ruffian' - which is really quite an English thing to say.
The reader is left at the end with all those questions while the writer drifts off in peaceful sleep in 10....9....8....zzzzzzzzzzzz
The best sleep I ever had was under anaesthetic ;p
Good one Deepika

Thank you Surya :))
A very deep poem, it asks so many questions and leaves a few to the imagination of the reader. These lines made me think and were so beautifully written " I can live those moments that just got rusted in my
thoughts,
Or the ones that take birth just in my Dreams in the
Night"

It's amazing how our mind works and how it brings out all these thoughts when we worry about what could happen with doing something as routine but dangerous still as anesthesia. Awesome work... I loved reading it!

Thanks a lot Emily :)
There is always life somewhere and death is merely a passage to the other.I like the analogy of choice between life or death under the surgeon's knife. It really make us realize things and how life is so precious. An excellent write...:)......
