Open Palm of Trust

Open Palm of Trust

A Poem by Berto

You are inside my thoughts,

within my bones,
touching delicate nerves,
like a bruised boxer being mashed against the ropes.

In a crowded room,
despite a thousand voices,
you hear me conspicuously,
but only when I ignore you.
As if in those moments that I'm off my knees you feel abandoned.

It frightens me to allow you near, but I vulnerably need your attention.

Are we two stoic icebergs,
concealing our true proximity beneath the surface?

Yielding to a moment of trust,
I allow pretentious word and guarded thought to flee, leaving us together in secure purity.

My hands are open,
will you trample on my palm?
