Chapter 2

Terri groaned. Light poured through her bedroom window and was nearly blinding her. She looked at the clock, 7:45. “I’m late!” She yelped, jumped out of bed, yanked open the door and hurried downstairs to look for her Mom. To her horror, she found a note left on the counter.

Terri,
I will be at the police station for a couple of hours. There’s some left over soup from last night if you wanted to eat. I won’t be home for a while. Tell Dad where I am.
                                          Mom

Terri panicked. What am I going to do? By the time I get there, first period ought to have started! Why is Mom at the police station?
“I need a ride is what I need,” She said to herself as she rushed upstairs and quickly pulled on a pair of jeans and a maroon sweatshirt. Who though? Who would be possibly pick me up? She scanned a list of possible people in her mind. Dad!
As if her thoughts have been answered, she heard the front door slam. “Connie are you here?” she heard Dad’s low but deep voice.
“Dad!” She screamed and bolted down the stairs.
“Wha…” Dad said looking panic stricken. “Terri! Why---where..?”
I grinned. “Dad,” She started. “OhtellmeyoucouldgivemearidetoschoolIwokeup justfifteenminutesagoI’mlateIneedaridepleasetellmeyoucamehereinyourcarIam solateandIdon’twanttomissAlgebra‘causeit’stheseconddayofschooldadandthe teacherstherearesomeanyouwouldn’tlikethenandwhatifsheassignshomewo-.”

Her Dad put a hand over her mouth. “Ok,” He said calmly. “When I let go, you are going to calm down and tell me where your mother is and everything that happened last night. Also, your not going to worry about school today because if you had given me the chance to talk, I would have told you that they cancelled school for today because of Tammy’s kidnap on the school grounds. The police are everywhere near that area.”

He let go. Terri breathed in a breath of fresh air. “What do you mean everything that happened last ni-?” She stopped. Everything that happened yesterday came flooding back to her. “Oh Daddy! Tammy! Tammy was kidnapped yesterday.” And then she let out a wail and fell into his arms. Tears started pouring down her face and into her father’s jacket as she sobbed. “I-I-If only-y I-I stay-y-ed with he-r-r!” Her father patted her back reassuringly. It’s okay. It’s okay. They’re doing everything they can.”
Terri lifted herself off his shoulder and wiped her eyes. “Mom is at the police station. She left me a note.”
“She did, did she? She told you I was coming over then?”
Terri sniffed. “yes.”
“Good,” Her Dad looked around the room trying to decide what to do next. “Here, why don’t we go into the living room and you can tell me everything that happened yesterday.” He led her onto the couch and she willingly sat down. He starts pacing the room now.
And then she told him everything. About Tammy at her locker, Tammy’s crush, her getting detention, the evil teacher, the new girl she met, her and her sister’s fight, her coming home, her falling asleep, her waking up, the police officers, their questions, and the officers and her mothers conversation afterwards. After she had finished, her father was still pacing the room.
“Hmmpphh,” He grunted, “Are you sure you didn’t know what she was talking about when she said you were ruining her life?”
“Dad, I told you,” Terri sighed “I never found out. She just stormed off.”
The door suddenly flew open.
“Mom!” Terri said in surprise. “Your note said you won’t be home for a while.”
“They told me I had to leave.” Mom said in a soft voice. She glanced at Dad and gave him a wary smile. “I think they got annoyed I was bombarding them with questions.”
At this point Dad had stopped pacing the room. “Connie, I got your message. I-I don’t know what to say.”
“How ‘bout they’ll find her? She wasn’t kidnapped?” Mom said and Terri could tell there was anger in her voice.
Dad looked scared. Terri didn’t blame him. Mom had always been the tough one in the family. Her Mom, Connie Landon was short, a little chubby, and had emerald green eyes and medium blonde hair. Her Dad, was tall, muscular, and had baby blue eyes and shaggy bleach blonde hair. Terri sometimes wondered why and how they ended up married with two kids. Terri thoughts shifted to Tammy. She felt a sick and empty inside. Even though Tammy was the taller, prettier and cooler one between the two of them, Terri couldn’t help feeling that there was something missing from her life.
“Mom, can I go to the library?” Terri asked suddenly. “It’s important.”
Mom looked as if she had been hit by a rock. She opened her mouth. She closed it again. Terri knew what was coming. “Mom, I will be extra careful. I won’t get in a car with somebody I don’t know.”
“Ok, I’m staying with you then.”
“Mo-om,” Terri said and at the same time Dad had said “Connie.”
Mom looked at him for a second with a frown then said “I’m still driving.”
“Fine.” Terri said sternly “I’ll call you from the pay phone when I’m ready to leave.”
“Make sure to call before it get’s dark.”
“I will.”
“Ok, then lets go.”
“Dad?”
Dad jumped as if he had been a trance and just woke up. “Er, I guess I’ll be going now.”
Without looking at him, Mom said “I’ll give you a call when there’s any news on our daughter.”
Dad blinked, muttered what sounded like a “thanks” and left. Terri heard his car start up and leave. As soon as he left, Mom said “Terri, you can’t go.”
“What? But you said!”
“That was only because your Dad was there and he would have took you to the library if I didn’t.”
