"Tammy!” Terri yelled. Her sister was at her locker grinning. “What are you grinning like that for?”
Tammy Landon looked over and grinned. “Hey ter! Guess what?” She grinned even broader. “Do you know who Trevor Marshall is? I think he’s new." She asked her expression turning dreamy.
"No. But I'm pretty sure you do." She replied
"He is so cute." Tammy said.
"I'll bet." Terri scowled.
"No really. I think he is going to ask me out."
"Whoop-dee-Doo!" Terri said as Linda Kent walked over. The two started in a giggly conversation that Terri was sure involved Trevor. Terri sighed and walked toward her 9th period class.
Last class. Finally! she thought. I just want to go home. Eight hours in school is enough! Normally, I would love to stay in school but today, I feel sick.
Walking into room 121, Terri found the nearest seat to the window. Putting her books on the table, she looked around. Five people already here, six including the teacher. Sitting in her chair at her desk, the plump lady was madly scribbling something on a piece of paper. On the white dry erase board in front of the room it said "Welcome to English Class, my name is Mrs. Sumiton". Next to it; someone had drawn a stick figure with a big belly on it.
Terri yawned and put her head down on her desk. Why am I so tired today? I feel as if I haven’t slept in ages.
Looking outside she shivered. It was a rainy day in Hashville , California .
I feel awful! Does it have to do with that feeling of nervousness from being in high school for the first time, or was it that cardboard taste pizza I ate in lunch today? Ugh, get a grip! The day is almost over. Tammy doesn’t seem to have a problem with high school. She’s a sophomore and I’m only a freshman. Tammy’s all popular and I’m just a geek! No! You are not a geek Terri Landon, you’re just smart.
Terri was the total opposite of Tammy.
She loved school, Tammy would rather stay home all day doing nothing and being bored all day ("It's like I am at school." Tammy remarked to their mother one morning)
She had medium blonde hair, dark brown eyes, slightly crooked teeth and a crooked nose (from their mother)
Tammy however had silky blonde hair, baby blue eyes, perfect teeth and a slightly off nose (from their father)
Tammy loved shopping and cheerleading while Terri love reading and writing. Terri rather would watch shows like "Judge Judy" or "Wheel of Fortune" while Tammy loved "American Idol" or "Cheerleader Nation". Terri likes old war movies and horror while Tammy would never get tired of watching "Bring it on" or "Bring it on again". Even though their parents are divorced, and they live with their mom, Tammy is closer to their father. Their father remarried and now lives in Ashville with his new wife Rebecca Smith. Tammy wanted to change her last name to Smith when she learned her Dad did. They do get to see him once a week, but Tammy feels that each parent should get one child. Mom got full custody. So now it’s just Connie (Mom), Tammy and Terri living in an old house on 45 Yokshire Street .
But, despite their differences, Tammy and Terri were really close and shared everything with each other. Especially secrets.
“No, I haven’t seen her yet.” A loud voice booming through the door said.
Terri turned her head. A tall blonde boy was entering the doorway, one arm loaded with unorganized books and the other holding a cell phone to his ear. Something about him made Terri stare. He had beach blonde hair, serious dark brown eyes and something about his smile made Terri’s inside churn.
The teacher looked up and glared at him. He gave her a grin, shut off his phone and stuffed it in his jean pocket.
Terri rolled her eyes as he came into the classroom and sat behind her. This is going to be a fun English Class! she thought.
The late bell rang and about a dozen kids rushed into the classroom.
Mrs. Sumiton looked up, and jumped; as if realizing for the first time she had a class this period. Getting up with the attendance seat, she walked to the front of the room and wrote “Detention-tomorrow after school”, followed by a list of names. Everybody was silent at first but all of a sudden you’d hear groaning and “Hey, why did I get detention?” The boy behind Terri saw his name and yelled “Come on Mrs. Sumiton, I wasn’t late.”
Mrs. Sumiton turned around and looked the boy in the eye. “For one thing Mr. I’m-Going-To-Speak-Out-Loud-Without-Raising-My-Hand, the names on the board do not necessarily mean you were late. Second, if I ever see that cell phone in my class again, it’s mine for the rest of the year. Got it?” She said in her high-pitched voice.
Curious to know whom this boy was, Terri looked for his name on the board. The board says Kenneth Green, Dwight Armstrong, Lindsey Gale, Leonard Steel, Casey Mantel, Trevor Marshall, Linda Kent, Kristy Benne-wait, Trevor Marshall? Trevor Marshall? Where have I heard that name before? Tammy! Tammy’s crush! It had to be him; Tammy usually went for blonde haired boys. Ha! Wait till Tammy knows her lover’s in my English class. She’d go crazy. She would probably make sure she got detention.
Thinking of Tammy’s reaction, Terri giggled. Mrs. Sumiton glanced in her direction and said aloud “Young lady seated over by the window, what is so funny?”
Everyone turned to look at Terri. Terri’s face turned bright red. She knew it because she felt blood rushing to her face.
“Excuse me, young lady seated over by the window I said, what do you find so funny?” She said her voice rising a little louder.
Managing to find her voice, Terri said “Nothing.”
“Well, “nothing” has earned you a detention.” She said, “Maybe you will think next time before you snap at me like that. What is your name?”
“Terri Landon.” Terri said as she gaped in shock, I didn’t snap at her, did I?
As she turned to write Terri’s name on the board, Terri turned around in shame and saw Trevor staring at her. He probably knows I’m Tammy’s sister. Great.

The sound of the bell was music to Terri’s ears. She grabbed her stuff and jetted out the door. Her locker was just around the corner. What a day!
“Ugh!” she fell to the floor and books and papers went flying everywhere.
“Oh my gosh, I am so sorry!” A girl with medium brown hair looked frightened.
“It’s all right, I’m fine,” Terri said as we hurried to gather our stuff, “At least it’s the end of the day.”
The girl looked up at her, and smiled “Hi! I’m Sandy ,” the girl said excitedly. Sandy Marshall. I just moved here from Minnesota .”
“Well, welcome to Hashville , California .” Terri said with a grin. “I’m Terri and I hope your day is going better than mine.”
“Wow, rough day on the first day of school.” She said. “My day was pretty much okay, except I was late to every class.”
Terri laughed. “How long did you have to get to class in Minnesota ?”
“I didn’t go to school in Minnesota .” Sandy said. “I was home-schooled by my mom.”
“Wow,” Terri said. “How come?”
“I don’t like to talk about it to people.” Sandy said looking around nervously.
Remembering she had to meet Tammy at her locker, Terri said “Oh my gosh, I’m so sorry but I have to go right now!”
Sandy frowned and looked confused. “Was it something I said?”
“No, I have to meet my sister by her locker, were walking home together.”
“How far do you live?”
“ Chestler Ave. ”
“That’s pretty far.”
“No, not really, it’s down by that old haunted house.”
“Ooooh, haunted house?” Sandy ’s face lit up with joy. “I love haunted houses.”
“Not this one,” Terri said as she walked away “I love horror and even I won’t go near this one.”
*******
“What took you so long??” Tammy demanded as Terri hurried toward her.
“I was talking to my English teacher.”
“About what?”
“About something, gee why are you all of a sudden interviewing me?”
“Never mind, let’s just go.”
Terri looked carefully at her. “You know that Trevor Mars-”
Tammy stopped walking and looked into her sister’s eye. “Terri, if your trying to ruin my life, then it’s not working.”
“What??” she gaped. “I’m trying to ruin your life?”
Tammy started to walk. Terri did too. “Tammy, for Petes sake-what are you rambling about?”
“Shut up Terri, just shut up!” Tammy pushed open the front school doors. It had stopped raining but the ground was wet and you could smell the fresh scent of rain.
“No! Not until you tell me what’s going on.”
Tammy looked at me and scowled. “Yeah whatever Terri Landon, just leave me alone.” Tammy walked away. Terri stood there, her mouth open and backpack slung over her shoulder, wondering what she did.
***
“Mom? Are you home?” Terri quickly opened and closed the front door. Terri had stopped over at the town’s library Hashville Memorial for a couple of hours before heading home. She could smell the sweet scent of her Mom’s famous tomato soup. Terri was still trying to learn that special ingredient that made it so good. Tammy would try but she can’t cook. She once had a friend spend the night here. They tried to make brownies. Terri will never forget the look on her Mom’s face when she came home from work and the kitchen was a new color and flavor-chocolate!
“Hey honey. Where’s your sister? How was your first day of the spa? Why are you home so late?” Mom was in the living room reading a book.
“Hey Mom, I didn’t see her, it’s not spa Mom, it’s S.P.A. and my first day at Sheldon Parker Academy was fine (Terri didn’t want to tell her about scoring detention the first night) and I went to the library after school for a couple of hours. Is that your famous soup Mom?”
“Yeah, it’s in the kitchen,” Mom’s expression turned worried “You didn’t see her at all?”
“Don’t worry,” Terri answered “She’s probably with some of her cheerleader friends at the Food Shack or something.”
“Hmmm, you’re probably right.” Mom continued with her book.
Terri set her stuff down on the table and wandered into the kitchen. The aroma of tomato soup was making her stomach growl. Grabbing a spoon and a bowl, she filled it to the top. Glancing at the clock, Terri couldn’t help wondering where her sister was. Tammy was known to stay out late but their Mom had specifically told them to come home before five o clock that night. It was nearly five-thirty now. Where had she gone after she stormed off? Terri had a feeling she was at the Food Shack (which is the place Hashville kids hang out; mainly people from their high school Sheldon Parker Academy-S.P.A.) with her friends. Terri yawned and stretched. But she hadn’t bothered to look for her. She had gone to the library right after. She was so tired today. Leaving the bowl in the sink, Terri started up the stairs. She saw Mom sleeping on the couch her book carefully marked at the place where she left off. Poor old Mom. She worries about Tammy too much. And Tammy goes around thinking she could get away with everything. Boy, is she going to get it when she comes home.
*****
Terri was in a dream. A very peaceful dream. She was walking in the moonlight. Along the sidewalk. Alone. No-wait, not alone. She was with someone. Someone is beside her. Who is it? She couldn’t turn her head, she felt like it was stuck. Who was that? Walking slowly beside her, every step she takes, he takes. Every breath she takes, he takes. Terri could feel his presence in the air. Suddenly she stopped. He continues on to walk. She could see him from behind now-clearly. Yes, very clearly. Who is it? He looks so familiar. He reminded her of someone she knew-
“Terri!” Terri suddenly woke up from her dream. Did someone call my name?
“Terri!” Yes someone did. She turned her head and looked at the alarm clock. It was 1:30 A.M. Terri got out of bed and opened the door. “Whahapenn?” Teri yawned.
Her Mom was at the foot of the stairs, and it looked as if she’d been crying. The door was opened and there stood two policemen. Terri hurried downstairs, her pale green nightgown fluttering behind her. “What’s wrong?” She was suddenly wide awake now.
“Honey,” Mom said gently, “Your sister was kidnapped.”
“Wha-?” Terri didn’t understand.
The chubby officer cleared his throat. “Let me ma’m. Terri, your sister Tammy was kidnapped.”
I am dreaming. This isn’t happening.
“We need to ask you a couple of questions about the last time you saw her. Uh- I do believe it was after school, you two had an argument over something?”
Tammy’s in her room. She’s just hiding.
“Miss, what did you have an argument about?”
Tammy’s upstairs. She’ll come out and scare us any second. This isn’t real.
“Miss?”
Terri looked up and jumped.
“Miss? Would you please answer the question?”
Terri looked up at the chubby officer’s face and said sternly, “How did you know we had an argument?”
“Some neighbors were in their yard at the time. They’re the ones who saw your sister get pulled into the van.”
“They didn’t literally see her get kidnapped Terri, the policemen don’t know if she really got kidnapped at all.” Mom said from the stairs and it sounded as if she was trying to stay calm. Terri turned around to look at her. She was sitting down on the last step with her head in her hands. She looked up as she said that. Her eyes were all red, puffed and swollen. “They saw her get in a van-that’s all.”
Terri turned to the officers. “Uh-yeah, we had an argument because she said-”
“Because she said what?”
“ – S-s-she said I was l-l-late meeting her and I needed to stay after for a while.”
“So why did you tell your mother here you hadn’t seen Tammy at all?” Terri’s heart beat faster.
She looked at her Mom and blushed. “Did I really? Oh-I-I must have misheard. I’m sorry.”
Mom sat blanked face as she said this. “You said she was at the Food Shack Terri. Why did you say that?”
“I thought she would have gone there with her friends.” Her face was red as a beet.
“Thank you, that will be all for now.” Said the skinnier of the two.
“Ma’am, we need to talk to you.” They looked at Terri at this point. “Alone.”
Terri took her cue and went upstairs. But she didn’t go all the way to my room. She stood hidden in the shadows at the top of the stairs. She needed to know what was going on. Terri could hear the police officers faintly.
“…she...we will find her…if….give up the case.”
Terri heard her Mom give a faint cry at this comment. “But she’s just a juvenile, can they do that?”
“If a person is missing more than 72 hours, and the police force has done everything they could about it, and we haven’t found the juvenile then it’s out of our hands.”
“What would you label it as?”
“We would send a copy of your daughters file to Missing and Exploited Children, but we’d move on to the next case.”
“But you can’t do that. She’s my daughter!”
“Mrs. Landon, do you know how many children are missing every year?”
Mom gulped. “Too many.”
Terri quietly tiptoed into her room and slipped into bed. She felt as if her heart was pounding out of her chest. She laid thinking. What happened to Tammy? Where had she gone? What if she’s dead? It’s my entire fault! I should have walked home with her. But it was partly her fault too. If she hadn’t yelled at me….Terri felt disgusted. No, it wasn’t Tammy’s fault at all. It was mine. All mine. What was she mad about anyway? Terri gasped realizing she never really did find out. She was mad. Really mad. What did she say- I was ruining her life? I have to find out. Maybe it has to do something with her going missing? Maybe. And then again maybe not. Terri looked at her clock. It was 3 o’clock. She hadn’t told the officers what they had been really arguing about. She didn’t want them to find out what Tammy was furious at her for. What if it was something personal? It wasn’t! Or was it? What could it be? Tammy told her everything……
