A Shadow Walks With Me Today

The loneliness of grief

A shadow walks with me today
- I wish that he would leave -
He reminds me of my deepest loss
And forces me to grieve

He tells me that you've gone away
That I - alone - must stay
Without your smile
- your gentle touch -
Until my dying day

Without your soul
The world seems dim
- All shadows -
drab and wrong
I never realized before -
my life would feel so long

Tomorrow - I'll get out of bed
Tomorrow - I won't cry
Tomorrow - I'll do like you said
- I'll do my best to try -

'Time heals all wounds' I'm told again
- 'he'd want you to be strong' -They must not feel your loss at all -
To be so very wrong

A shadow walks with me today
I know now - he's a friend -
The only one not watching on -
Expecting me to mend.

I like your poem. This is so wonderfully written. The words hold a deeper meaning, stirring up emotions within me. I also like how you rhymed the words and though I am not techy when it comes to poems, however I can say that this one is well-constructed.

Never was a truer words said than in your last two lines. They're the comforters that see you through, they're the arms that hold your trembling 'til it stills. Your words are beautifully laid, have fine, fine meter, and, importantly, the language is pure and simple.

This is a sad and precious poem.

Thank you so much :) I must admit the last part I have experienced several times in my life so far. That's not to say that the people around you can't be wonderful and supportive but grief is a very personal thing and you can't seem to help seeing the pressure of their wish to see you whole again written in their eyes with every sympathetic look. It's something that doesn't seem often put in to words...probably because it sounds so unappreciative and harsh but then again the truth often is :)

I keep trying :) problem is no matter how happy I am in myself (believe it or not I'm a happy sort of person) my happy poetry always ends up sounding like a hallmark card :) doesn't mean I don't keep trying though so maybe one day I will manage the right balance!! :)
