Qualities of Humanity

Qualities of Humanity

A Poem by BenjaminJames

I've been scratching my head rather fierce for what feels like years
In an attempt to uproot memories I once held dear

Last week I felt a flake of skull pry up, like a scab begging to be peeled
Like a sunburnt shoulder that taunts as it waves to you in the wind
For the velvety new skin beneath to be revealed

Yesterday the longing got the best of me
So I cracked my skull open on the edge of a stone
I dug as deep as I could reach
Digging up memories is a difficult task on your own

My heart was dropping with the quickness of a kite piloted by a three year old
Everything around me grew so Decemberly cold
I can feel death approaching now
Everything is fading to a romantic black and white

And as I fall to the stoney ground I feel something break loose from inside
A small sphere of gold rolled out of my mouth, just out of reach, but still in sight

Today I saw past the billboards and satellites and remembered the warmth of the sun's kiss on my neck

And like the irony of all life changing experiences
All it took was death
