Ashes To Ashes

Ashes To Ashes

A Poem by Ben Barton

You're going through hell yet again
Walking through fire, dancing on coals
You can't see a thing through the smoke
But you know how that feels; you've been here before
Have you learned your lessons this time?
How to move forwards when each step is like murder?
The end feels much further this time
Breathe in, breathe out; one foot, now the other
Your body begs you to give in
But the fire burns out, the smoke starts to thin
You stand on an empire of ashes
Wondering how to rebuild, where to begin
Your eyes see only destruction
But the faintest of whispers says, so gently, "No.
Ashes are the most fertile soil
Stand here, in the ruins, and watch life start to grow."

I struggled to find a proper rhythm with this, so I'm not sure how well it flows. But let me know what you think! Tips and pointers and comments of that ilk will always be well received.
