A letter

Dearest Lillian,

War is the most queerest game I have ever imagined to play. And I only say it is a game because that is what General Robuust tells me War is. I heartily disagree - you have fun whilst playing games - but he is adamant that we shall have fun here in France. It is frightfully muddy and yet the flies still seem to swarm about us in a sickening fashion. I have only dim memories of the boat trip - I have supressed any thoughts upon those horrible days and terrible nights - but getting off the ship was like a baby walking for the very first time - my legs were so accustomed to the rocking of water I promptly fell over! Then we were given shovels and had to dig huge holes in the soil, which became our homes. Disgusting. Food is... nice enough... I am still waiting for a roast and three veg. with Alice cake to finish!

I was most surprised when I recieved your letter, and then very, very pleased and proud. Hopefully this War will end soon enough for me to come home and witness the birth of my own child. Do you have any names ready?

I have one. Yesterday I met a man called Hugo Snubbs. No, don't worry, I don't want you to call the baby (if it is to be a boy) Snubbs, but Hugo is a kind, big-hearted man with a spirit just ready for adventure. He is also smart, witty and suits his name. Do you like the name Hugo for a boy?

Of course, if the baby is indeed a girl, then it is custom that we use our mother's names, is it not? How about Ella Maria? That sounds pretty enough.

Give my love not only to the baby but to all my family and yours too, and remember to give yourself a generous helping, too.

Love,

James

Aww that's really sad, how they're separated by the war. I know a lot of people like that. You did a great job. Well done!
