Grandma?

Grandma?

Shaysha was crying before she woke up. The tears were flowing down her cheeks as fully and as unstoppable as the blood gushing from her wounds.

When she did open her eyes, all she could see was car. She could see the roof of it, the seats in it, the smashed window panes scattered everywhere. Some of it was burrowed underneath Shaysha's skin too. Shaysha could feel it.

Pain was engulfing her.

Shaysha knew her time was up. As she felt pain overwhelm her senses, she remembered all the good things in life... parties... kids... grandchildren... her husband... everything that meant a lot to her. She felt tears of emotion prick. The tears of pain were receeding, taken over by sheer sadness. She remembered the battle against cancer at the age of twenty, the treatment, the chemo. And how everyone stuck by her, how everyone was determined to make her well. And now she was lying in a wrecked car on the side of a unused road, her life begging to be set free - free from the pain Shaysha was enduring.

As she drifted away, one last, softly spoken word was said - it came from behind Shaysha, in the back seats - it echoed around the tree and plant life, striking a spear into Shaysha's dying heart.
