Remembering

Remembering

A Poem by Beccy
"

for my Grandma, who passed away fifteen years ago this month. She is always in my heart and mind.

"

A decade and a half later,
I still remember the love
that shone from your eyes,
the tranquility of your repose;
and the butterfly I found
trapped in the conservatory,
that I set free, then watched,
as it settled on your favourite
rose bush; stilled, as if waiting.

For a time, my heartbeat
had sped faster than the
wings of that little butterfly.
Then, there was only silence,
a connection beyond words,
imprinted forever in memory,
as we spoke about the world
you had left behind;
the journey you were making
and how love binds stronger
than steel and cannot rust.

The funeral itself was distant,
a half smile playing on your face
I imagined; as voices made
little fusses, then faded.
But for me, a decade
and a half later, nothing
has faded. The love still
shines from your eyes;
and I have never had to
ask myself, for how long?

For my grandma.
Who along with so much else,
introduced me to the joy of poetry.

Hi Beccy,
This is the first time a poem has brought tears to my eyes.
I loved my grandparents so much, both transplants from your England. Summers with them were like a Norman Rockwell painting :) ... sweet memories that never fade, as long as there exist memory-links like your "Remembering."
Cheers,
JD

OK, though irritatingly bewildering at times, regarding what one can do, or not do. You know, a soft.. read more

Such a tribute a about a wonderful and such a meltingly beautiful poem. To speak of where it all came from in so many ways. I agree with my friend Gee.

A sad but an amazing tribute to her with just the right words and tones for the occasion. I can feel the special place she occupied in your hear, the influence she had on your life and the overwhelming love gained and lost. May she rest in peace and may you keep her memory alive as an honor.

What a beautiful bunch of memories you have painted with words. The imagery is so vivid giving the sense that these memories are close to the heart and forever with you. Lovely to read and thank you

I miss mine as well. I was the favorite of of one, she let me stay inside on hot summer afternoons and play solitaire with her and she would send the rest of the kids outside to play...lol. This was wonderfully nostalgic and super creative. The butterfly analogy is perfect.
