Sunday Matins

Sunday Matins

A Poem by Beccy

It is early and dew still adorns,
but next door someone is already playing music,
the sound spreading,  being shared,
dissipating the haze of morning.

But listen, further out, the church bells are ringing,
telling me there is no music save their own;
that I need to escape the weekday burden.

Momentarily, I practice scales.
Hum to the music, watching
leaves in self contained rhythm,
grass swaying in concert;
the sound of birdsong becoming
louder as I ready myself.

"Time to go mum," he calls,
"I'll start the car for you."
(his favourite growing up thing of late.)
"Nearly ready darling," I call back,
coat and umbrella to hand,
thinking that even dark clouds and
rain are worthy of prayer;
on a Sunday morning,
when someone is already
playing music.

A lovely snapshot of a moment on a Sunday morning. There is something awesome about the summoning of church bells. I always find it so uplifting. That and the musical notes of birdsong at dawn and trees chattering softly are a joy. I am thankful for them both. Beautiful work Beccy.

It takes great empathy to hear the 'music' an innate understanding of how it all works, and you have it in spades.

Such an incredible scene painted here.

Never having been a church-goer myself, this is an amazingly sparkling word-portrait of how it looks & feels & sounds to go thru one of many Sunday morning routines like this. I love the melding of nature & God's nurture, plus the conversational aside (parenthesis) conveys familial affection that can be felt. This is a prayer of thanks disguised as a vignette (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

There's an eerie je-ne-sais-quoi to this one. Profound and powerful in its themes and progression, and at the end leaves readers with a thought-provoking element to ponder on. This seems to require further reading to really get an angle on (even though it all seems so simple....sometimes the seemingly simple bear the deepest treasure). Well done!

Gee
Your son is a lucky, lucky boy. As I know from experience no better loving relationship than that of mum and son :)
Hope you are both well
Loved the writing

I'm usually out running when the churchgoers are on the march to prayers.
Strangely enough, you don't seem to hear church bells ringing now, except on special occasions.
I like people going to church though, gives hope to people like me.

I feel like I've gotten to know this character better than some I've spent entire novels with. Or maybe she just reminds me of my mom.

No matter what, this was great.

Thank you so much Christoph. I am always so very happy when a portrayal has such impact.
I am glad we agree that there is nothing more lovely than the sound of birds and swaying grass; it is a language begging to be understood and reveled in. It comes to mind that there is a holiness that surrounds us that does not need any explanation by man or woman. You paint a wonderful picture.
