A Poem by Beccy

It was a mile or more I came to walk

on that small and winding track,

'til the tree line closed out all around

and there was no turning back.

Such silence filled the evening air,

such thoughts ran through my head,

as I listened, watched and waited

to see where I'd been led.

Then came a gentle rustling noise,

two eyes; bright beady black,

watched careful as I slowly knelt,

then careful watched right back.

A moment passed: it seemed an age,

until inquisitive he came,

still guarded, but with wish to see

who'd entered his domain.

His head was sleek, his step was light,

his coat shone white and black.

He watched me, careful as before,

and I careful watched him back.

Another step; so close he came,

so close, I dare not breathe.

Then we talked, and though no words

were spoke, I begged him never leave.

How long I really can't recall

those liquid eyes held mine.

I was spellbound; lost, wished

he would stay to the very end of time.

But sudden then, the moon came up

and in a blink, he turned and fled.

But left me glad, so glad I'd stayed

and found where I'd been led.

After an evening walk in Everdon Stubbs, a local woodland.

I love the way you stretch this out like sweet taffy . . . just letting your words pique the imagination of the reader, but never quite giving any answers. I love the mystery & the patience you evoke. I love poems that leave us with something to wonder about, trying on different possibilities (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

I was thinking magpie...girl, you are one of the best at stying a scene, would love to see you do that in a short as well. You gently lull an pull the reader among these paths of wondrous visuals and emotives. Makes me happy and a bit envious....

Sorry for the typos...I swear I can spell!!!!
This smooth, excellent-rhyming poem held me firmly till the end. How many different creatures/things I attributed to those eyes, I cannot tell. (Several) Oh, well. The walk in the woods would have been fabulous if only spied upon by a field mouse.

Masterful creation.
A mere walk becomes an elegant ride.
Impressive!

What an enchanting read! I love nighttime walks,
and the animals you may discover. In the mountains in Arizona,
you never knew what you might meet. Elk was very common.

We have badgers in our woodlands near home, but very rarely see them. Sadly you are more likely to see them as road kill. You took me with you on that woodland walk Beccy and I very much enjoyed the experience of seeing nature up close. Beautifully penned work in flowing rhyme. A real pleasure to read you.

Gee
What a lovely read Beccy. Rhyming verse penned perfectly and a seamless tale told too.
Only badgers I ever see are the ones that litter many of the verges around MK.
Hope you are both well...Take good care of your magic quill :))

I've never encountered a badger, not even sure we have them where I live. But, your poem reminded me of an experience I had with two of my younger brothers when we went hiking and got lost many years ago. We wandered up on an armadillo, which was an animal that had recently begun to migrate up to our state from the south. They are curious animals--like giant roly polys with faces and tails. He didn't want anything to do with us, though.

One of my brothers was only about six, and he was so determined to catch up to the animal that he tore off after him and we all ended up lost after trying to get a closer glimpse. An adventure! Much like your encounter here, Beccy. Nature has some wonderful things to teach us if we are attentive to the voice and willing to let it speak to us rather than trying to make it into what we want.

I really enjoyed this.

Delightful poem beccy. You have an uncanny ability to put the reader precisely into the scene; and here, you allowed me to witness that brief moment as if I were by your side.

Trust you learned something from the encounter.
