A match not made in heaven

A match not made in heaven

A Poem by Beccy
"

For Hazel, who made the right decision.

"
The light was dim, dear Josephine
drew gloves upon her feet,
paused the while to contemplate,
then sighed, "this feels so sweet.
Each toe I own is singly clad,
so snug, quite safe and sound,
'tis comfort of most pleasant sort
of that I'm truly bound."

"Ahh, Josephine, dear Josephine,"
her bearded father said,
"come child, eschew such frippery,
today's the day you wed.
You cannot dream all of your days
now a bride you are to be,
just think if fish walked on the land
and man swam in the sea."

"Dear father," Josephine replied,
her eyes demurely cast,
"I do not love poor Wilberforce,
'tis a union sore miscast.
He laughs when 'ere I pen a rhyme,
his attention is quite fleet,
and though I've begged him many times
he wears socks upon his feet.

His toes are cold, so too his nose,
his eyes are colder still,
and I've no wish to marry him
for all the coffee in Brazil.
So tell him I have just expired,
pray father, tell this ruse,
for each toe I own is snugly clad
in gloves, not silly shoes."

Well written, and amusing. Well done, yet again.

What the wise Ken said, yes. There is a beguiling mix of the humorous (bordering on a playful silliness, really) with the tragicomic. The use of rhythm and language is just pitch-perfect. You are awfully, awfully good.

Sort of Lear crossed with the romatics crossed with Andre Breton. Which strangly enough not only works... it works very well.

Oh and I've just read in your profile that you like Coleridge. That explains it.
