A Chapter by Tanner

“Yo Ren there’s some dudes here asking for you by name, should we let them through, or do you want us to rough them up?” The boy smiled into the intercom.

“Son you should know that we’re highly trained agents.”

The boy laughed more, “apparently their highly trained, please let me give them some lessons.”

The man sized the boy up, who could have been no more than 15. He had bruised knuckled which proved he’d recently been in a fight, but no bruises to be seen, which means he probably won.

The radio crackled back with the voice of the leader, “let them in, their not a threat.”

The boy started to lead them through the doorway when one of the men stopped and said, “hey kid, aren’t you guys gonna check us for weapons?”

The boy laughed, “even with them you’re no threat to us.” The men continued to follow the boy down a long brick hallway when the boy stopped, “matter a fact, you guys might need guns, if you don’t have any I’ll grab some for you.”

The tall man with black hair and a five o’clock shadow scoffed at the boys sly remark, but the other man knew that they were heavily outnumbered, and outgunned. even if they had back up, and guns, Ren by himself could take an army.

“You are taking us to Ren right?” the blond haired man asked.

The smiled as he opened a set of doors that led into a room much nicer than the rest of the abandoned building this band of teens were hiding in. The walls were freshly painted white, and there was a red oak desk sitting in the middle of the room with an empty chair behind it. The floor was freshly waxed, and there sat two chairs in front of the empty desk for the two men.

“You gents can take a seat here, Ren will be just a minute. If you feel like your life’s in danger I’m Three, just yell for me and I’ll bring the cavalry,” the boy walked out of the room laughing.

“Did he say his name is Three?” the dark haired man asked.

“Yes, if you had read your report you would know that Ren has Six ‘Generals’ to run certain posts. Until last week we thought his people were just here in Chicago, turns out he’s in 27 different states. My guess is that kid runs the midwest area.”

The dark haired man started to laugh, “are you sure you want this Ren guy in the program, he’s leaving little kids in charge of whole operations.”

“Well Agent Black, that little kid has evaded the CIA, and taken down some of their best agents by himself. For a while we thought about recruiting him too, but he’s not a meta.”

“Speaking of metas, where’s the super charged meta you’ve been talking about at? Didn’t that kid say he was taking us too him.”

Then the lights started flickering, and there was a loud crackle of electricity. Agent Black shot up from his seat gun drawn, looking like he was about to make an agent brown in his pants.

Then the bolt of electricity started to take form in the chair behind the Oak desk. Slowly the blinding, hot, white bolt of electricity turned into a low blue glow revealing a young a man, around the age of 18 to 20 with dark black hair, and tan skin. He had a strong build, looked like even without his powers he was a force to be recon with. This is Ren, was the man with the blond hair only thought.

“Hello gentlemen, what can I help you with today?” The two men gaped at him astonishment feeling the sheer power that just went through the room. “I think it’s funny all you suits come in here wanting to partner with me, or threaten me, but then when you meet me you’re too scared to even speak.”

Agent Black put his gun in its holster realizing how small his pistol seemed again the power that sat before him.

“Well, I guess I’ll do the introductions then. My names Ren, but you already knew that, just like I know you go by Agent Black but your real name is Fred Stewart, and you go by Agent Gold but your real name is Carter Smith. You, Agent black, used to be in the Special Forces, until you resigned two years ago. And you Agent Gold were an analyst for the CIA, one of the very best, but you I guess you go tired of being stuck behind a desk, because you disappeared off the radar until today.”

Agent Black sat down, and looked over at Agent Gold trying to get a read on how the man would react to Ren knowing all this secret information. But he remained very calm and cool to Agent Blacks surprise.

“I am impressed, but I guess with an organization as large as yours you have a few hackers to dig up information.”

Ren gave a sly smile, “yeah, hackers.”

“So then, if you know all this about us do you know why we’re here?” Agent Gold asked.

Ren shook his head, he may have hacked into the CIA’s satellites, but both these men have been in the dark for two years. Everything about them in the time span they’ve been missing is a complete mystery.

“Well don’t worry, we’re not here to cause any problems. You see 20 years ago the first metas started showing up. At first the world freaked out, but then it settled down after about 5 years. 10 years ago a group of metas started reeking havoc in New york, and were a serious problem until they pissed off an even more powerful meta by killing his wife. He had the power to control liquids, and killed each and everyone of these metas at the same time literally making them drown in their own blood.”

Ren shifted in his seat, and cleared his throat before speaking. “Why exactly are you telling me a story about my own parents? And why are you leaving out the most important parts? Like where the government decided my father was too powerful, and sent a group of assassins to kill him, and leave me with no family. Or the part where instead of thanking him for saving their lives, the people of the city called him a monster, and demon. Because both those parts are pretty good.”

Agent Gold spoke softly, “I’m telling you this story because I want you to know that I know your father was a hero, and I think the world is in desperate need of some heros. Some real heros, some that live forever in legends, and even after their dead make the bad guys think twice about doing anything.”

Ren sat quietly for a moment processing what Agent Gold was saying. The room wa so quiet the only sound was the sound of electricity crackling from the pure power that was inside of Ren.

“So what? You want me to drop everything and leave my people behind, just to go and save the people that outcasted all of us anyways?”

Agent Black finally found words again and said “listen kid, I get it, you were wronged, and your pissed. But I know you’re type, you wanna help people, that’s why you have you’ve created this empire. But there’s more out there for you. If you let us, we’ll help you save the world, and sure you’re gonna end up saving some bad people, but take it from the man that spent his whole life saving people, even if you save 100 bad people, and only 1 good person, it’s worth it if it means that one good man get to live and make a difference.”

Ren nodded understanding, and agree with what he said. “So what exactly are you offering.”

Agent Gold smiled. “Well what we’re asking of you is to come with us, and train with other metas to become the heroes we know that you’ll become, and in return we’ll give you a life of adventure, and the life of a true hero. This will require you to disappear though. You’ll have to leave this life behind. So we’ll give you some time to think about it.” Agent Gold set a phone on the desk and stood up. “That phone’s been programmed to make one call, all you have to do is hit send and it will immediately call me. Just say accept or decline. If you decline, no questions asked, you’ll never hear from us again. But if you accept I’ll come to get you the next day. Please let us know within a week. I thank you for your time, and I hope whatever decision you make is the right one.”

***

After the two agents left Ren Three came into the room. “Ren! I’ve missed you!” The boy ran up and threw his arms around Ren to embrace him in the hug a little brother would give to his older brother.

Three being the youngest of all his generals was like a little brother to Ren, but even though he’s young does not by any means make him a weak. In fact Three is number three because he’s the third best of all the generals, and that’s not saying that five and six are exactly weak.

“So what did those guys want?” Three asked with excitement boiling up inside him.

“We’ll talk about it in counsil. I need you to call in the other generals for a meeting, tell them they need to be here by tomorrow night. Until they get here I’m going to be in solitude, I’ve got a decision I need to make.”

Three gave a nod, and left the room to go call the others.

Ren pulsed with electricity and disappeared from the room, taking the phone with him.
