Notions

Notions

A Poem by Alicia Hirshey

Notions of sadness
Fill your head
Leaving with thoughts
"I'm better off dead."
Tiny voices
You long to cease
Never once knowing
What is waiting
Under the sheets
Times are crazy
Rough waves ahead
No signs of stopping
"I'm better off dead"
Woman I love
Has nothing left for me
Drug me down
In this bottomless sea.
Easy dosage
Pills at hand
Will I end it
Or take my last stand
Times are crazy
Rough seas lay ahead
All the time
"I'm better off dead"
Friends and loved ones
Never understand
The pain i face
I am the loneliest man
My love for a girl
Who no longer loves me
I want to give up
I want her to see
Children of mine
Have grown in age
Oh! How I love them
I'd never throw them away
A friend who loves me
Calming the storm
All this time wondering
Is there truly more?

Author's Note

Alicia Hirshey
Written for a dear friend of mine. He is going through a rough time. And while I was talking to him today I was struck with this sudden inspiration. The first time I have been inspired in months and I owe it to him. i know it isn't my best. But its whatever.

Anyone can take on a different persona, but it takes a real writer to do it effectively. And in your case, the poem felt as if you wrote it about yourself. And so you pretty much mastered the tool. Not to mention the effective use of repitition that actively pounds the story in the reader's head. I like the somber and creepingly hopeless tone of the poem as my eyes descend further into it. Excellent. Favoriting. :)

Well you caught his pain and emotion well, I hope it gets better for him soon.
