After you've done a thing the same way for two years, look it over carefully. After five years, look at it with suspicion. And after ten years, throw it away and start all over. ~Alfred Edward Perlman, New York Times, 3 July 1958

We must go through life knowing that one day, we will realize that we don't need anyone but ourselves. In the end, we ourselves get ourselves through the day, others are just there to help us along the way...they don't do all the work though. Sure, people are able to talk us out of certain things that can help destroy us and we thank them for it, but they haven't completely saved us...we save ourselves by putting our trust in those people. This also shows a transformation of a girl trying to find her confidence after so long of being by herself...and standing up to the world around her to find her place where she belongs among them all.
Such a vivid and heartbreaking poem. I really think the way you worded and contained this is truly beautiful. I can feel the sadness and emotions, a girl with her head sunken down, afraid to look up. And, especially the last stanza:
Little girl nothing
Turned away from the pain
She saved herself
That warm summer day"
Strong, and touching. :)
I love the quote you used with this enlightening poem. Sometimes I stop......look around......and realize others have problems and hurts just like me. We should all do this more often.
