Letting You Go

Letting You Go

A Poem by Alicia Hirshey

"All changes are more or less tinged with melancholy, for what we are leaving behind is part of ourselves."~Amelia Barr
~*~*~

Daddy you left me
I’ve nowhere to go
I’m here with mommy
But it doesn’t feel like home
Who will raise me
Teach me as his own
Daddy, why did you have to go?
~*~
Empty promises
Made in a sigh
What is the matter
Afraid of your lies
Growing up
Was never easy for me
You didn’t care
You took off and left me
~*~
Hatred forming
For the man I know
It doesn’t matter
He has a happy home
Forced to struggle day to day
What about my tears that you never wiped away
~*~
I was never good enough
I see it was true
Anger is building up
At the sight of you
At night I still cry
I want to be held tight
But where are you, daddy?
I’m losing sight
~*~
All grown up now
A child of my own
I will be there for him
I’ve learned from parents of my own
I loved you, daddy
It took this long to see
I still don’t understand
Why you left me.
~*~
Daddy you left me
I’ve nowhere to go
I’m here with mommy
But it doesn’t feel like home
Who will raise me
Teach me as his own
Daddy, why did you have to go?

A request from a friend, Sarah. Who wanted me to write a poem about when he dad left her, her brother and their mother. "He basically abandoned us."

Sarah, It may seem hard and the resentment you feel may never go away, but he has made you who you are today. Don't throw what you have away. Learn from him, that way you don't make the same mistakes.

Absolutely an amazing write. One so many of us whether we be child or adult can relate too. It is very unfortunate that there are so many dead beat dads out there. Any male can be a father very few can be a dad!!! You captured this very well with such tremendous emotion. I had tears in my eyes. xoxo

Ali, what amazing stuff you can create with such a simple, heartfelt request! Your poems always portray feelings that are so real that the reader can feel and understand what the narrator is feeling! Beautiful...tears came to my eyes which is usual when I read your poetry! Loving it!

Omg ): this is so sad....it's like me and my dad....to much like me and my dad. :/ it's beautiful though Ali (: and to Sarah....I'm so sorry you had to deal with that...I know it's hard...but you can make your life so much better than anything you could imagine. Don't let him ruin you ):

An amazing and heartbreaking write. I can feel the resentment and wonder tingling of the edges. A power choice of words, and a relatable subject. Magnificent job :)
