Portrait of Death

Portrait of Death

A Poem by Beatrice Mars
"

Giltter in your eyes?

"

Can you see the
(portrait of death)
Rain
through all the glitter that’s in your
eyes?
and in remembrance for the
future
we'll say our vows now
for the dead we know
are coming.

Sometime later

This portrait of death is rather bad,
and in the time we were away some awful things have happened
(I'm sorry I shouldn't address you like this is a TV soap opera
But it's the only way you'd understand)

You can't see
(the Art)
Them
with all that glitter your eyes
So I'll describe
(the Art)
them
to you

The look in their eyes is always the same
glazed over and far away
rather like yours
(although they are dead of course)

Their hair is almost
always matted
and
they are covered in blood
and dirt

It has been days now
and there are rats
nibbling on their toes
and the flies and the maggots
have infested
(invested)
themselves

The woman’s clothes
have been ripped
to shreds
and for the matter so have the men’s
and also the children’s
(no one is was safe)

You can't see the portrait of death
that was painted so finely
(the death that comes for me
as blood runs over my fingers)
but I hope you understand
what you are hearing.
(the portrait of death)
