On the BattlefieldA Poem by Dalton WagonerThis is a sensory poem I had to write for my history class. It is set in World War I.My name's Deiter, I'm 19 I'm German and I'm super keen I'm so pumped for the Great War We will show these countries what-for We'll blow these countries out-of-the-water And every last traitor will be slaughtered We'll put the Allies on their knees And make all the Americans flee 6 months later... Men are crying for their moms I am deafend by the bombs Screams of men from mustard gas Planes are flying all amass My best friend just lost his head Half of our men are already dead Bullets barely miss my chest The commander is so distressed Rotting flesh has a bad smell And rat poop smells so bad as well Peoples' feet smell just like death We could kill with just our breath The taste of mud is so bitter A rat is surprisingly a tasty critter I think the water has something in it The scraps we eat make me vomit My gun is so heavy to hold And my dug out is so bloody cold My skin is burnt from the heat of grenades The barbed wire cuts me like blades I hope to leave and find a bride Then children that I'll raise with pride I'll find a home and settle down And live in a little country town I have nightmares every night "Shell Shock" always gives me fright I learned to trust the One above And treasure all the ones you love
