Sustained Devotion

Sustained Devotion

A Poem by Scarlet Pulse

Sunday night

Misery enfolds

The pacing, headaches, upset stomach

Weariness of constant doubt

Tears streaming down an angry face

From the agony

Scrutinized continuously

Sweaty palms

Monday, always harsh

Ten long years

Why the cruelty?

Two steps ahead

Fighting people in high places

Swimming in dishonor

Some days

My heartbeat slows

Thinking of leaving the world

Waking up, realizing

This is no solution. The

Future is what I live for

Situational cloudy conscience

Steady and calming

My wife

Taking the burden away

Wanting peace for me

True and loyal

Fighting beside me

She’s always there

Stern request, almost a command

My love,

Take your worries

Wash them away with the waves

Together, we’ll capture the silence

For the chance to free your heavy heart

Surrender

Suits and cufflinks, dressed to the nines

Market opens with sounds of the bell

Twenty people at a desk

Working together, advising

Toothpicks chewed to nothing leading to

Frustration from all, causing lingering smoke

Satisfying the detained desires

Selling and buying

Millions of dollars

Ticker tape consisting of highs and lows

Written by hand using lead and memo

Trades recorded

Fast paced, telephones scream, no

Seconds to spare

Scorned and rejected

Malicious acts from masked men

Twisted minds

Wounded, but I pray for them

The light shines through darkness

For I have been tested, too long

Still standing

Smile with anticipation of a good day

Miraculous assurance

Treat treachery with forbearance

Wait

Time will tell vindication

Forgive willingly

Serenity

Savior

Morning prayers

Truth

Willful strength

Trusting in Him

Faith and faith alone

Survival

I think this poem emphasizes what poetry really is. It doesn't follow any of the rules of most writings, to include most conventional poetry. It is clear that it was not written simply to fit someone's demands, but to portray what is on the writers mind and heart. It does not just say something to the reader, but inspires the reader to feel what the writer is feeling. I find it most intreguing that it is complicated only by its own simplicity. Good job.
