Can Squirrels Tell It's Christmas?

Can Squirrels Tell It's Christmas?

A Poem by Baz

Can squirrels tell it's Christmas,
Does anybody know?
Do they take their favourite acorn
And wrap it tightly in a bow?
Do they scamper up the old oak tree
To reach the branch above?
And do they give this Christmas present
To the squirrel that they love?

Can squirrels tell it's Christmas,
Does anybody know?
Do they stay up late on Christmas Eve
To hear that Ho! Ho! Ho!
Do they sit inside their tree-house
Looking out upon the sky?
And do they try to spot old Santa Claus
As he goes flying by?

Can squirrels tell it's Christmas,
Does anybody know?
Do they wrap themselves up snugly
And go playing in the snow?
Do they frolic in the snowflakes?
Are they filled with extra cheer?
Are they merrier than normal
At this festive time of year?

Can squirrels tell it's Christmas,
Does anybody know?
Do they sidle up beside their love
Beneath the mistletoe?
Do they stand beside each other
And in momentary bliss
Do they look into each other's eyes
And have a squirrel kiss?

Can squirrels tell it's Christmas,
Does anybody know?

I hope so.

I love this piece. You did a great job structuring and sticking with it. Also your rhymes were good, I didn't find and that were cheesy or common. This made me wish I was a Christmas celebrating squirrel lol.

Why ever not as they like us evolved from vermin for we as mammals all began life at the same time so give them Christmas and decorate their tree with snow and pine cone baubles lol. Great meter and rhyme as usual, keep em' coming

A brilliant poem! It's written so well, and the idea is lovely, christmas from an animals view, devoid of human corruption and commerce! There's a great innocence behind it, really nice poem!

Yes--they know and probably understand it's meaning more than us silly 2-legged creatures.

I honestly think you should compile your poems and get them published Baz. Kids will absolutely adore your words and what an introduction to a life enhancing art form.
The poem itself is as whimsically uplifting and disarmingly funny as everything else I've read by you- i've just put your dickens re-write on my reading list for tomorrow. it's one of my favourite ever stories and the fact that you've managed to put it into a poem greatly intrigues me, but I'm just too tired to read anymore at the moment! Take care, spence
