The Thorn Of 1973

The Thorn Of 1973

A Poem by B A S S E M A S H R A F
"

this poem i wrote about the war of 6th of october it was the greatest war that Egypt ever enterluted in.....it says that a young man went to his grand father for a visit, his grand father was a soldier in this war....he took his grand son for a long round

"

The Thorn Of 1973

one day i was sitting aside

on the front seet beside

my grand father who lost his eye sight

in nineteen seventy three

he took me for a long round

he told me how the story sounds

he told me how they defended our ground

in nineteen seventy three

we went to his friend's grave

he was "mina" he was brave

he made us masters after slaves

in nineteen seventy three

then he pointed to a place beside me

and asked:"what can u see?"

i said it is just an old thorn tree

from nineteen seventy three

now it became an old thorn

and history altered into a cold stone

and now I'm here alone

since nineteen seventy three

that thorn i watered it with tears

in this pure land without fear

and now i can't see it clear

because of nineteen seventy three

then suddenly i looked behind the fogs

two men are coming with thier dogs

they were cutting the thorn's logs

the thorn of nineteen seventy three

the land was sold to a foreigner

and history will remain no longer

the history of our grandfathers

the history of nineteen seventy three

This is very fresh, and refreshing to read. There is great pride and emotion in the poem and the repeat of 1973 stirs the emotions. In the West we often only hear the emotional agenda of the other side. So this poem helps to give balancing comment from an international perspective. But above all that is the simple relationship between the old man and his grandson and his eagerness to let him know something of how things were for him and to impart his msg to the next generation.

this is an amazing story, it has great lyric qualities,

always remember those stories. . . those histories

and sometimes from the thorn a rose is born or a poet . . .
