The ArtistA Poem by James HorsleyA little bit of sarcastic humorThe artist was a man of the world His fifth story apartment was decorated with many paintings, some of fish, some were landscapes, and there was even a self portrait or two.
His hardwood floors were kept clean and polished, And his kitchen was spotless The place often smelled of very dark roasted coffee- one of his many addictions He drank it black, savoring the way it made him pucker inside and out. On those rare occasions when he saw fit to grace the world with his presence, he ran only within the most upstanding social circles. They frequented the most prestigious social clubs, they dined at the most expensive restaurants- of course, they never ate anything with a name you could pronounce in less than four syllables As was only proper, they drank only finest Italian wines. The artist painted things with substance, regardless of what the critics said. Few could gather any meaning from the seemingly random, geometric figures of his sculpture- but only because most people were too simple minded to understand. He was a master of dabbling in poetry as well. His compositions seemed nonsensicalacious, S A ER E C TT D He could throw a sentence from one side of the page to the other He was after all above such formalities as traditional structure or form The artist lay down at night on satin sheets rested his head on silk pillows He could always rest easy, knowing that the world adored him and his kind. He was tired, and needed sleep But then again, everyone in the world slept, And it was unbecoming of him to act as the rest of the world. Perhaps someday he would overcome this proletariat, faux luxury as well. © 2008 James HorsleyReviews
