Sonnet the Third: A LamentA Poem by Paden HaynesA sonnet, in mourning of our greatest treasure, slowly being lost.Across the vacant parking lot, errant Breezes drift between the empty cars. Where is the proud and lasting monument? What mark can man leave on the earth When at last he flees among the stars? What was our time upon this planet worth? Not much, the last fish whispers as it dies; The last bird, screaming, tumbles from the sky. Our Mother Earth bears children born of rape: Pollution turns its tricks beneath the trees Where birds once sang. What is to be the fate Of this blue pearl which once gave us our birth? The Sons of Adam turn their bulbous eyes Upon the sky, screeching: “We are alive!”
